I reckon its just a ploy to make Plywood acceptable as a tone wood.   Then Epiphone are gonna pop up and say "SEE, WE TOLD YOU PLYWOOD EB BASSES WERE COOL!"  :P

Hey, where did the posting with the threatened bass export embargo go?

Knife manufacturers have been using that multi-layer laminate approach for wooden handles for years.  I think it's a very cool idea to use it on musical instrument bodies.  Let's hope some basses are forthcoming!

i don't see the point. wouldn't one or two pieces of birch be better. i can understand if your using different kinds of wood. but if its the same wood it just seems like a way to use cheaper wood.and since when does anybody make birch guitars anyway? that said they probably sound fine just look ugly.

I'm such a hypocrite, I think Status one piece Cabron fibre basses are great and yet I cannot come at a plywood bass.

Laminated "Pieces" of wood I have no problem with but Laminated veneers I do. I'm so confused  ???

Birch is a great veneer wood  -very few knots and mostly consistant grain structure which means you can more easily dye the wood.  The veneer is made by unspooling the entire log into one big sheet - meaning cheap with very little waste.

I'm with John though - it's still just plywood :P

As it happens, my dad was responsible for instroducing plywood to three midwestern states just after WWII - so I understand dave's comments about plywood as a protected product name.  But let's set aside that nicety of nomenclature....

What's the problem with "plywood"?

"Plywood" works.  So does Lucite.  So do agathis, mahogany, ash, maple and various exotic woods.  I see no reason that a highly attractive manufactured wood laminate should be an inferior wood.

Incidentally, when I saw Aerosmith Saturday night, Joe Perry played a custom guitar with lucite body and headstock on some numbers.

But then, I humbly admit that as a wood philistine, I don't consider the wood to be a critical factor in sound.  I really like to see nice woods used in instruments, and I know there's a difference between solid-body, hollow and semi-hollow, but the type of wood doesn't concern me in terms of sound.

I remember Rob or Chris posting an "art bass" site where the luthier made the whole bass out of builders "plywood"
