I still have my EB-0F. I wish it looked half as nice as this one, but as Dave said, there's a reason why only 265 of these sold..... :-X

I think one of the keys about storing in a case is humidity.  I've lived mostly in low humidity areas, and my P-bass was Ok in its case for 23 years.  Same for a '64 EB-0 that was in a case for most of 20 years.  However, in a humid climate I suspect either case would have become (at least) musty.

Musty............Mildew.............FUNGUS Not as much of a problem in Minnesota, as the extremely cold winters take all of the humidity out of the air. It does get hot & humid in the summer, but I think below zero temps are a bigger concern. I have bought used cases that stunk so bad, that it was a few weeks before my wife would let them in.........

Most of my basses & guitars do ok in cases for long periods of time, but I only have one EB-2 from the fifties. Some of the plastics used in the early years seemed to emit acidic gas over time. A friend of mine had issues with the gold on his pickups, we concluded that it was caused from deterioration an old pickguard. The plastic tuning buttons on my '59 EB-2 shrunk, don't know if being out of the case would have helped. A new case most certainly emits formaldehyde. I was looking into building a two level rack years back. I didn't have room to angle them & an eight foot ceiling wasn't high enough to stack basses 2 high. As Uwe mentioned, Gibson's cherry, gold and cherry sunburst finishes, (also sparkling burgandy),  fade with long term exposure to sunlight. I make it a point to not leave these out for long periods of time.

I keep mine in their cases, upright, on an inside wall. For the hollow & semi hollow body guitars, I try to remember to add water to the case humidifiers monthly, in the winter. The ones I rarely play, I detune a bit.

Oh well.  You can't argue about the taste.

Oddly enough if I won the lottery I would not be into hoarding a bunch of the same thing.  Maybe one very nice NR, then on to more exotic fare, like an EB-0F.

Then...

Not getting too greedy............ an EBSF-1250, An EB-6 both versions, nice unmolested NR & of course the origional EB!
Anal-log stuff is always best!  :o ;D

Going back to the opening thread, it looks like Focus is using Fender Super Showmans for amps. I believe that this was the the only amp Fender produced with the Tel-Ray oilcan reverb built in. It was set up like a Fender Dimension IV. I've seen them in catalogs, but this is the first time I've ever seen one (or two) actually used.

I like my RI, but have never tried an origional. I imagine it will feel similar to my '59 EB-2 with one of the last of the single coil pickups. That pickup must have one of the most massive coils ever installed in a production bass!

There was, maybe still is, a store that sold 78's locally. It was set up like a store would have been at the time. They always had a dumpster full of unwanted records. Out of thousands of records, they only had one blues recording, Big Bill Bronzy. Most antique stores didn't bother stocking 78's because they don't sell well. A lot of forgotten musical history just waiting to be rediscovered!

That's a nice looking piece of furniture as well as an operating phonograph.

What kind of 78s? All genres?

Pretty much anything left behind or unwanted by people that got wind that I was into this. My grandfather had a duplex for about 50 years, many renters left them in the attic. I ended up with all of them, plus he gave me his personal collection from when he was young. Popular music at that time was marches & opera. A lot of John Phillip Sousa. I would like to get to Chicago & try to pickup more of the blues 78's that inspired goups like the Beatles & many others. Those seem to be scarce. I have a few unplayed Les Paul albums.

I have a small collection (three) of wind up Victrolas and many unwanted 78's, most of witch I may never listen to. I find them kinda neat in the fact that you can play it & it sounds exactly as it did nearly 100 years ago. Unlike restoring an old radio & still hearing rap music on it. I recall reading a story about the musicians union objecting to these newfangled phonographs. They were sold as musical instruments, the union must have figured they would take work away from union musicians. It did happen eventually, but not until disco became popular..... >:(

This one is actually a Columbia, the other two are Victrolas
