GC can be convenient and worthwhile if you go in knowing exactly what you want and what you think you should pay for it, because the sales guys are rarely any help. Whenever I found one he was gone a month or two later... The upside is the deals you can get once in a while. Even the newer stuff gets blown out every now and then and you can get some killer deals.

You can say the same about almost any big chain, from Home Depot to Best Buy. It's best to know your product ahead of time because most of the time you'll get someone who doesn't know what to tell you and is likely to say what he thinks you want to hear.

Back to the '59 P... This was just posted on the FDP:

"On the provenance issue, Rick (who owns the shop - New Kings Road Guitars) is a personal friend of Gregs, and I have personally seen him in the shop twice. So I guess it does, or did, belong to him."

That doesn't convince me. Makes me wonder why his "personal friend" (if that's true) hasn't vouched for it in writing.

Gonks Go Beat, one of those movies that must have been made by someone with money to burn.

MP3's?   can someone please explain how taking 90% of a recording away and leaving only that last 10% of the original information doesn't change the quality of the reproduction?

I'm sorry but 128bps mp3s suck very badly to someone who listens to music many hours a day.

Depends on the encoding. Some 128kbps mp3s are so harsh I can't listen to them through, others don't assault my ears. OTOH if you listen to an mp3 player through cheap earbuds, you may not notice a difference.

I can't explain how. I do know that most people can't distinguish a VBR MP3 at -V0 (~245 kbps) or -V1 (~225 kbps) from the original in ABX blind tests. Again, most people, not everyone.

Some of you might be amused by this (or not): Avatar plot = Disney's Pocahontas  :)

I hear you, but she's three times the girl she used to be. Seriously. And that can't be good. I saw a pic of her being helped to the mic by a couple of assistants, either they were were midgets or she was enormous.

And Stevie Nicks... ever hear The Rotters' infamous "Sit On My face, Stevie Nicks"? That could cause serious damage today.

To each his own. I'll be charitable and just say my opinion of his music is the same as my opinion of him personally. You couldn't pay me to go see him.

Okay, found it. Hard to tell what it really is.

It sounds overly busy to me. OTOH I've never heard Tull's version.

I would approach it much like like Leo Kottke did the bassline on guitar. It's not on YouTube but this guy plays it like Leo.

Remember flower child folkie Melanie (Safka)? She was a pretty young thing, now she's big as Nancy Wilson and Stevie Nicks put together.

All this time I thought it was a JS Bach composition. Now you tell me it's Tull. You learn something new every day.  :P

I'm not suggesting it's cork sniffing, I'm sure some people can tell the difference. Most can't, and most don't care anyway.

Despite Dave's (highly accurate) assertion, Miserlou is one of the top half-dozen surf category songs ever recorded.  Since Dick Dale made it famous, it IS surf as far as most people are concerned.  Ranks up there with Pipeline and Walk, Don't Run.

Agreed. And yet it never charted. Nothing Dick Dale did ever charted back in the day, except maybe in his fertile imagination. It became famous via revisionist history after Pulp Fiction.

But I could hate on Dick Dale all night.
