I've been wanting to do a replica of the ORIGINAL JAE Fenderbird for a while. This is one of the few pictures I've come up with, it's from 'Bass Culture'. By the time the book was published he no longer owned any of them
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02502.jpg)
There's this one
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/tbirdrings.jpg)
and this one from a Who gear site
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/fenderbird_rsg-2.jpg)
Here's my recent '2010 Fenderbird
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/2010%20Fenderbird/DSC01987.jpg)
So I got the flock together to mull the options...
If I'm going to do one I might as well set up to do a run of 10. I have this inverted pin router which allows easy repeatability with carefully made templates
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02486.jpg)
I made a tracing of Denis '76 body and bandsawed and smoothed a template from it...with that I made another one.
Used a L.H. Fender Japan p bass neck for neck screw template and a Mighty Mite neck for the pocket template. I was pleasantly surprised by the Mighty Mite quality.
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02451.jpg)(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02470-1.jpg)
Here's the first effort, basically just a rough idea. What I found is that the JAEbird body is a little different than just a Tbird body with a neck pocket. So it's back to the drawing board.
But I did clean up the shop.

Dang Carlo, you go!
The Fenderbird JAE is playing in the first pic is clearly different than the basses in the next two pics if you look closely. Were both basses in the second and third pics his?
Your last pic is cool because you can really see the differences between so many versions of Thunderbirds. Look at all those headstock variations!
The second picture is different from the next 2 (front and back). That one is from here:
http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass7174.html
It supposedly is an original. The bottom horn is shorter. The back view actually shows more clearly the short horn. The top "horn" is also more vertical and more similar to a '64 TBird than a Bicentennial, which makes sense. I found a few more pictures on the Whotabs site.
I modded one of the templates and will give it another try tomorrow.
Very cool. I'd love one of those pin routers. The basses look great!
Interesting........
The bass in the B/W pic has '60's 2 screw pups and the orange ones have '70s 3 screw pups.......
Cool project, wish I were not so broke right now - this is the one 'bird I still GAS for.

Yeah, the b/w obviously is the real thing, the first orange is contemporary, it's from the frets on the net site. The second orange I think is also real because it has the proper bridge and period correct case and is on the Whotabs website. The RI pups on it are a question mark but the body shape seems to match the B/W.
From "Rock Stars Guitars":
"This red example was damaged by Keith Moon on stage, during a smashing session during the Quadrophenia tour. The body was cracked and the bass returned to Peter Cook for repair. " (http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/fbird-paxmancas_rsg.jpg)

I'm just learning to use the router, having some trouble getting bridge/tailpiece screw holes spot on. But routing a body and cavities is really easy and safe with the cutter being under the table. After I turn some more pine into firewood I'll move on to poplar and mahogany. That will probably be slower going.
Thanks, those 'birds are a major part of the R&D budget! ;)
Yeah that pin router is the nutz! looking good !
Excellent thread! Very educational for a newb like me!

Never mind, dumb question. Got lots more if you want to hear them!
Hey bro, I've been so busy I haven't had the chance to send you a tracing of my 65' reverse. But if you are Really trying to make an exact repro Fenderbird, I would contact Curt Traynor, I think his handle is DC10Bass. he has the absolute perfect Identical fenderbird, i believe made from an original template or tracing.

I got mine off Ebay, new they are about 4k, I paid less than 1/4 of that with a vacuum hold down system. Mine's the previous 110 volt model. When the router motor dies I'll replace it with a 220V.
Here's a video. It's a light production machine, check out what they are cutting! I bandsaw to line, use 3 cut depths. I'm trying to keep my cutter sharp.

I though about buying one from Grizzly or Foxcraft but they are around $500 without the router and are close to being toys IMO.

Thanks, Baz. No problem! I think DC-10's might be slightly different from JAE's first version.
The second pic is of a replica that I believe somebody on this forum owns. Note the Warwick bridge/tailpiece. I LOVE that bass!
I also love the pin router. That used to be my favorite tool when I still worked out back here at the flight case shop. We got a 12' x 5' CNC router about 3 years ago, but the pin router still sees plenty of action. Mostly for custom foam cutouts.
Grizzly's benchtop overarm pin router is lightweight but they do make a heavier duty floor model. It's over 2K though, if you really want one you're probably better off looking for a used one. CNC has made used pin routers less valuable.

Obsolete equipment is always a best buy. For around $1k you can get a heavy duty Delta overarm. Of course you need 3 phase power or a convertor ;D

DC-10's bass maybe? I'm going with the whotabs Jaebird since it has the most complete set of pix and there's actually one of JAE with that one and its case. They're very close except for the bridge and slightly smaller bottom horn on the JAE.
From what I know, all the PC's used original Gibson body hardware... mine varied as she had PC pups but original bridge and tail...
After seeing this picture I decided this is the one to do. I'm trying to keep everything in proper proportion, if you see anything that doesn't look right please point it out. The total length of the bass is 46 1/2 inches (1.18 m). Neck dive should be minimal. I'm figuring weight at around 8.5 lbs
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/jae-bstage-fbird.jpg)
Second body with hornectomy, control cavity and dummy cover, compared to original. Upper horn shape needs some work
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02539.jpg)
Pup cavities and P/G layout. Dummy bridge
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02541-1.jpg)
Mockup of P/G, pups and knobs, the bridge pup ring is an actual Gibby. It's easier to drill the mounting holes for the bridge/tailpiece before separating them. This is the one off Fenderbird 2010.

She's real purty ;D
Coming along nicely...
crikey, you work quick... :o
You asked for input? ;D
The original's pickguard was more organic in nature on the up and lower bouts - above and below the neck. Lower bout should be less bulbous and the upper should be a bit more - to my eye. The origian has a very graceful curve thing going on as moves around the heel of the neck.
Also, the top edge of the guard is too close to the top of the body by about a 1/2"
Other than that it looks great!

Looking good, Scott! Maybe this build will inspire you to complete it. This is my only project right now, I have a very simple life so I can put in 4 hours almost every day.
4 hours a day ! oh I wish ! With family, work and the band I get distracted easily.
Geeeeeeeez. 4 hours? You're a lucky guy!
The last job I had was working as the sound man at the Whisky a Go Go in 1977. Since then I've been self employed. First as a handyman, then a cabinet maker and finally a furniture designer. I quit designing furniture when I walked into Target, Walmart and Sam's and saw things I designed that had been knocked off by them after receiving samples from the factory I worked with. Why work for free? I'm divorced, my kids are grown and I receive a laughably small SS check every month that completely covers my nut. Everything I have is paid for, including my doublewide.
Designing and building basses gets me out of bed every morning. I don't know how far I want to take it but right now it's a lot of fun. The plan is to build some JAEbirds and see what the response is. It's taken some time to get into the rhythm of physically building something again, for a while I thought my patience was completely shot but it's coming back.
Well then, good for you!
I hope that will be me in 2 -3 years!
I suspect I'll be in my late 60's before retirement....depends on whether the university does any creative retirement options. Some days I look forward to heading to work, some days I'd much rather not.
i retired when i was 57 after getting laid off. i just said screw it, i've had enough. our house and both cars are paid off. unfortunately i have no building skills whatsoever to take up my time.

I agree!
Been working on proportioning the body and pickguard and it's getting closer.
I took the paper p/g mock up which I had intentionally cut big, taped it to a cereal box and cut out a template.
Transferred that to a piece of 6mm hardboard, cut and smoothed it and attached to a piece of plywood backer board. That black square is an $0.88 self stick floor tile from Lowes. It cuts really easily and is a moneysaver vs using plastic. Got the idea from somebody at that other forum.(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02583.jpg)
Here's the P/G and cavity cover prototypes (real ones will be 3 ply plastic) after cutting on the pin router. I think I may be able to bevel the edges using the pin router. Man, am I digging it!(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02576.jpg)
Cavity cover in place. For the belly cut I used a Japanese pull saw, chisel and drawknife for the rough out and a belt sander to finish it. I've considered getting a small shaper for this operation but this was pretty quick and rewarding. Again, hardwood may be a different story.
pickup placement?? anyone have exact spots??
Carlo I am thinking that moving the neck pickup a little closer 1/2- 1 inch may be the perfect spot. can you tell me what it is in relation to the Bach as the lull in that spot on my th-1 is truely sweet to me....
Mark where is the spot of the lull you have????
It's in the exact spot as on my BaCHs and Orville and Gibson NR according to the info I've seen, 10 11/16" from the 12th fret to the mounting screws . But I'm always looking for more info and it can be easily relocated to wherever you want it.
I could 'swimming pool' the body route and send you the guard without the pup route in it and you can position it as you want then route the guard...the pup ring would cover up any mistakes with that.
I'm a Philip K Dick aficionado...
I really don't like the idea of being "retired..."
How about retarred? That's how they pronounce it in the south, sort of rhymes with retard...which fits a lot of the time.
By the way, do you have any problems intonating your PC? The reason I'm asking is that the bridges on the BaCH and Lull 'Birds seem to be larger than they need to be if the bridge posts were positioned correctly.
Mine's in the "right" place, intonates perfectly - the layout and dimensions mirror the JAE design, but with a through neck - from what we worked out with advice from the chaps the neck mimics a D profile "P" in shape and thickness... the bridge and tail are Gibson parts, came already gold plated when I got her... I'll measure and confirm with you tomorrow... she's asleep in her case at the moment... ;)
Anything else dimensionally needed, just holler...
(Not sure I like the idea of being retarred and feathered either... :o)
Thanks! No need for the dimensions Kenny. I was just wondering if there was a reason to make the bridge bigger in order to get it to intonate. Obviously not. I was looking at some 19mm (3/4) inch square tube yesterday that could easily be machined into an original Tbird spec bridge. The gold plating on your parts fits exactly JAE's tastes. They were probably all done at the same time. There's a magnificent picture of an ExplorerBird in Bass Culture with all gold hardware and pup covers.
Being a designer of cheap but cleanly designed furniture it's a pet peeve of mine when people with a relatively unlimited budget and a blank piece of paper mangle a great looking design like the Thunderbird bridge/tailpiece combo.
Just posted this on the TP thread - E and A are reversed it may be worth knowing... intonation has always been right and what you see above is the same as when I got her and now... - obviously had a slight alteration or two in other departments, mind you...
They don't make 'em like they used to! All you need and nothing more. I'm using a similar trick with my modded bridge. E saddle and carrier are flipped around. A is OK.
Should be - you can see that the carriage could be the other way round, but that's the way she came...
I think I've settled on the final body shape. Sanded and sealed with 8 ounces of Mohawk heavy bodied nitro sanding sealer last evening. This AM scuff sanded with 320/400 no fil sandpaper and a block. Filled some missed spots with thinned lacquer based wood filler (I love the smell of Famowood in the morning)(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02586.jpg)
Ditto the back
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Project%20JAEbird/DSC02587.jpg)
2 heavy wet coats of Mohawk nitro lacquer, about 8 ounces, sprayed at around 20-25 PSI at the gun with a fairly tight fan pattern, 15 minutes between coats. I'll sand it back with 400/600 this evening and shoot 2 more coats.
Mighty Mite neck, which came with a sealer coat, sprayed with Mohawk nitro gloss clear, around 3 ounces. I used a detail gun. Did not go with a "Vintage Tint" because it's not period appropriate. I'm considering doing polyurethane over the decal which will give a slightly yellow initial tint yellowing more as it ages. BTW, Mighty Mite P bass necks are out of stock from every vendor I've talked to. I will be using Allparts instead. They are at the least of equivalent quality, have traditional heel trussrod adjustment and a more period correct 10" fretboard radius.
This is my spray setup. Paint cost is around $20 a gallon, 3 guns total cost $70 (only one gun really necessary) and a home made shooting stand. Twin Turbo not included.
I can only paraphrase Baz, "If you don't own a spraygun, you don't understand."

The EMT is a tight fit in the holes in the maple and has enough friction to allow rotation but hold position.

JAEbird is closer to the original Peter Cook/ JAE design. Fbird 2010 got to the point where I knew some design decisions made a while ago weren't right but I just had to finish it.
The bridge and pickup toppers/rings are slightly different, again closer to the originals. These are SD SS4 pups, on the Fbird 2010 I used toppers and rings sized for TB+ pups and larger mounting screws.

A customer can specify or provide bridge, pups and placement (and number), body wood, body mods, custom paint etc. The price will change according to parts and extra work required. Mods will be part of the fun for me.
The JAEbird Standard price is $475 delivered in the US. Overseas shipping will be reasonable with neck detached. Lefty same price but with rosewood board.
Standard equipment Seymour Duncan SS4 pups with toppers and rings, CTS/Switchcraft. Korean open back tuners...Resolites add $90.

The price is based on getting some discounts from vendors. When you take building a neck out of the equation it cuts down the amount of labor significantly.
Cool bass, I dig LH necks. Are those RI pups or just the covers?
I can hook you up with a tailpiece for $25 delivered. With bridge $45. PM me if/when you're interested. Unfinished JAEbird body blanks and whatever parts you want for it will also be available.
My Onsrud weighs about 200 lbs and will fit thru a 25" opening with the table removed. I got mine for $700 BIN on Ebay, drove to NC and picked it up. I suggest googling Onsrud router, see what comes up. I really like the safety factor of the router being completely covered by the template.
Yes, that neck is sweet, and got it w/ good tuners already installed. The pups are modern black Gibson soapbars w/ Greatdealz covers. The bass sounds and plays great, although heavy. Toying w/ chambering from the back and laminating maybe, if I don't end up needing to sell first.
25 bucks is good.Send me one and pm me your preferred payment etc.
Thanks for the Onsrud info. The ones I have found are BIG&heavy!! Yours seems much more manageable. What model is it? Thanks again
Kudos on the JAEbird - it really came out great. Thanks for sharing all the cool build pics, that waterslide source, and details about that router! I would love something like that for my projects- you've got me prowling craigslist now too...

Thanks. Glad to share. Good luck on CL, I saw some other possibilities on Ebay when I bought mine, some really cheap but with very high freight charges.
Any market plans, got a web site up? I'm very curious as to how this works out for you. I'm working over all kinds of things for a retirement business - I'm looking at 11 or 12 years - I hope!

I'm going to build at least one extra bass for each one I get an order for and Ebay them to get an idea what the market might be. I don't know much about the costs vs effectiveness of websites but may do that eventually.
I definitely cannot imagine who would be buying basses in 10 years and what they'd be buying. The demographic for what I like is shrinking...I don't think I'd be wanting to build 7 string burled crapwood single cut praise basses. I have a marketing agent who always asks,"Who's your customer?" before a piece of furniture I design goes very far into the development stage. It's a great question to determine what might sell and if you want to do it.
Looks great! I agree, how does it sound?

Thanks! Sounds pretty good to me but I'll post some clips in a few days and you can make your own judgment. I will say it sounds much closer to a BaCH with an original Reverse Pup in than it does to a BaCH with an Artec.

If you don't want the expense of deploying a full blown shopping cart site, an easy option is add Paypal buttons to your own site for a pseudo-shopping cart type thing. In Paypal, there's a section titled "create buttons" under merchant services that will generate the code, and you just copy/paste it to your site. You can go in and setup all your shipping rules/costs so folks can just click and buy. Google Payments offers something similar too, IIRC.
Once you test the waters and gain more exposure with these basses on Ebay, you could set your pricing consistent on your own site and include a link to it in your auctions. Have to phrase in the auction like: "For additional info on this product, visit the manufacturer's website at ....", otherwise if you overtly point people there for purchasing Ebay sends the goons after you.
The more you can deal direct and just leverage Ebay for the cheap advertising, the better. In other words, throw one bass on Ebay and sell another ten from the direct traffic to your site. Hang onto them final value fees! ;D
I've had good luck with Bluehost for affordable web hosting. They offer a bunch of free scripts to deploy content management systems (CMS) that make building the site a relatively painless chore (sometimes... depends), and those really help with updating the site as you add new products, photos, links, audio clips... The CMS tools provide their own admin interface to your site, so you don't have to be mucking around with code all the time.

Definitely! I'd been thinking along those lines, there's a guy near here named Tom Clement who does that with Ebay. He has a pretty good website that points you back to Ebay but I'm pretty sure he's taking outside orders. I will check out Bluehost, simple is what I need. Thanks for the guidance!
That's what I was thinking - a simple, clean web site with nice images and descriptions. I wouldn't think you would build twenty of these at a time and carry a large stock. Still at your price point I think you will have some very decent traffic regardless as to how you sell them.

Jumbodbassman has ordered a JAEbird with the front pup 1 inch closer to the bridge. I bandsawed the pup template so it can easily be realigned and screwed it to the neck pocket template.

Comparison to standard JAEbird pup location. I'm using Allparts necks, they are more reliable to deal with than Mighty Mite and stock a lot of good stuff, ship quick and cheap. The neck adjustment is at the heel.

How about a paisley bird, Fender Japan style? They use wallpaper under a thick clearcoat.

Will do, paisan!
Control cavity tweaking...attached template to the body template with inset piece for actual cavity. I drilled the control holes 1/2" deep from the front before routing the cavity, it eliminates any visible tear out in the finished cavity. I also hogged out the cavity with a 1" forstner bit and the shopsmith to within 3/8" from the front. With a more powerful pin router this wouldn't be necessary.
Control cavity, top thickness is now 1/4" in cavity area.
Removed the insert and made the cover route. I have a lot of .01inch aluminum flashing so I'm going old school for shielding. It also works great as a ground. Cuts with scissors. That shielding paint is expensive!

Those paisleys are supposed to be very good basses, but I got overdosed on paisley in the 60's. :P
the reissues play very well and sound pretty good. Much better than the sting bass they put out a few years ago. I have one of those too.
I am thinkng of putting in a split coil pup in one of them , probably the pink one, to take away the 60 hum and maybe get the extra windings at the same time. I think Fralin or nordie does that package.

I modified a spray gun to use 1 pint wide mouth Mason jars. Makes cleanup much easier and saves the paint you can never get out of a metal cup except by using a lot of solvent. Drilled a hole in a lid, used a rubber grommet and a metal collar on the siphon tube. Knowing exactly how much paint remains is nice and storing it by just screwing a top on the "cup" is a big plus. It takes about 6 oz. of paint to lay down two heavy coats of color.

I did the math and for me it worked out with the high cost per ounce of rattlecans and the limited color availability combined with the tedium once you've used decent equipment. Rattlecans have their place.
My total outlay for spray equipment was around $200. That's a $30 Harbor Freight spray gun. The compressor has other uses, it operates the hydraulics on the pin router and was bought used for $125. To spray guitars you only need about 25 PSI at the gun and a fairly low volume of air, there's not a lot of overspray if the gun is set up properly. I spray out the rollup door of the shop, it's usually in shade and sheltered from any wind.
I've done all sorts of furniture finishes and if someone wanted a paisley bird I'd do one. Preferably with a giant paisley. ;D

Painting is the final frontier for me. I really don't enjoy painting bodies, but I know I'm gonna have to do it eventually if I'm gonna start building for fun and profit! For me, the problem is space also. I just don't have the room for a booth or usable setup right now.
Great idea with the mason jar.
What's your routine for clear coats, if any, and leveling/polish?
I'll be going with NC clear after I scuff/level w/600 wet/dry used wet w/a rubber block. Probably 2 apps of 2 coats each. then 600/800/1000/1500/2000. Light compound and swirl remover.
any new pics for me/us....

Rubber block sanded up to 2000 today after realizing there is enough paint coverage and Clear coat is unnecessary. Notice edges, they are completely unsanded. Generally IMO it's not necessary to sand radiused edges after the final coats. If prep work is done right they will be smooth enough to go directly to compound which helps reduce the possibility of burning thru the finish.

This is all subjective as hell but:
IMO the Barts have a little more bass response and output than the SDs which sound a little closer to a Reverse Tbird but are not as loud. The 4 wire Artec doesn't have a very wide frequency response, I have some 2 wire Artecs that I think sound better. The closest sounding pup to an original TBird I've used is the EMG Hz passive both for sound and output. The TBird pups are the loudest. Bang for the Buck an SD set is the best IMO. Around $120 for a pair.
I'm looking forward to what you think of the Barts.

Only thing I don't get is the trim ring on the neck pup.
all of JAE's fenderbirds had them also. I actually like the look better anyway. did it to by bachbird when i put in the lull.

Thanks, that's high praise, guys!
The guard pup ring can be seen pretty clearly on one of JAE's 'Birds in a
SUNN, 'Sound of the 70s' ad that unfortunately I no longer have. The nickel of the original rings reflects the black of the guard. If you check pix 1 and 3 at the beginning of this thread you can clearly see the six screws and just make out the ring...I'll be happy to do a ring delete at N/C, each guard is screwed to the body it's going on and then routed to fit the pup route exactly.
I believe Peter Cook would be honoured...
This one, Carlo...?

Yep, that's the ad. Makes me long for the days I played Coliseum Bass, Lead and Slave heads with 3 SVT cabs. That's an 880 on the bottom right.
That Fiesta Red 'Bird has RI pups but IIRC by the time of the RIs JAE had moved on to Alembics. It's puzzling...maybe PC could shed some light.
Paypal love sent to Carlo as deposit for my order. Fiesta red, rosewood board (I know that's not authentic, but this is MY bass), mahogany body.
Thanks, Mark! I love working with mahogany. I'm thinking about building two, one for you and one with the parts off my '65 Embassy.
BTW, if anyone is interested worldwide shipping is $85 via US Priority Mail for a JAEbird shipped with the neck off.
Interesting... the red one looks like it HAD a ring, but there's just the screws in these pics. And the black one mine was modeled after apparently never had one.

Cool pic! The black body yours was modeled after seems more radical at the bridge end. The PG and bottom horn in the Sunn ad look slightly different. The bridge and knob locations relative to the body outline are different on all three. They're all one offs! I chose the Fiesta Red one due to personal preference and this pic in Bass Culture. You can see the matching reflections on both the guard and body rings. Whatever, we love 'em all. Long Live Rock!

My wacko theories for missing rings:
Some of the donor 'Birds were NRs so they only had one ring.
Adjusting the truss rod involves removing 15 screws since there's no cut for adjustment in the guard. Maybe JAE's tech got tired of that. His action was so low that adjusting the neck was done quite often, strings got changed and setup checked for every show.
Carlo, I noticed that you list Tourquois as a color choice, what specific shade/type is that and do you hve a pic of it?
From top:Daphne Blue, Turquoise, Seafoam
If you have an exact shade in mind I can match a supplied sample for a slight upcharge.

Thanks for the compliments! If I could buy basses like these for $495 I wouldn't be making them myself. As demand increases the price will go up but at this point I'd rather build basses and a reputation than just wait for a sale at a higher price.

They really do kick ass! Maybe Curt ought to audition for The Who.
Nope - Curt should stick with what he's doing - the real thing is just a pale imitation by comparison... 8)
the Bird has landed. Got home pretty late so pics and more details later once i get to crank it up....
Initial feelings
Nice light bass. As all tbirds - a neck diver but manageable. IMHO this bass was made for finger playing, at least were i wear it. I tend to keep my basses high and this one forms a great forearm rest just like JAE which will make you play near the neck....
Neck is a very nice fender copy. straightest neck i have ever owned other than my foderas/smiths. I actually put a 1/4 turn relief in as it was too straight and action too low for me. I am not a big fan of fret noise except when i want it and like to use my fingers/feel to get some dynamics and funky click. 1/4 turn did the trick for me and action is still amazingly low.
Finish - really great job Carlo. Black is not easy in any form. This finish is not that of a 500 instrument....
neck finish- flawless...
Bridge. I actually have used this bridge on another bass and i thought it was a fluke. Tallest saddle at lowest setting is the d string. Playing fenders my whole life it usually is the a string. East fix with my file set. Actually bridge radius may be more than the neck so i wound up filing A and D string a little bit.
After spending only 15 minutes fiddling with it the action and neck is in my top 10 ( maybe top 5) basses and i have over 100 so that is pretty amazing to me after 1 hour.
Tomorrow hopefully i will crank it up. First feeling is i may have made a mistake using the barts. they appear very weak. actually under 4 close to 3 output when both on (3.8 and 5.7 respectively neck, bridge) . easy enough to replace if i decide so. Maybe Carlo's guy will come thru on the 64 pups....
overall this is a very nice bass. REALLY COMFORTABLE TO PLAY. My first fender bird but I now understand what JAE was thinking. Neck is so much better than my 76 and bachbird. Long bass but manageable but clearly different from a fender....
Carlo you really should charge more except for LBO folk  First lets talk about a white one (with gold hardware if possible) before you raise your prices
Carlo things to consider - option for cutout of lower horn. i need to put whole hand around to front of neck to get past the 14 fret. seems worst then the tbirds because the body is more like a fender in depth and bolt on.
Another thought - IMHO a 32" neck might make the fenderbird a perfect instrument. you could probably get 21 or 22 frets and still have the nut sit in about an inch closer. 90% of my basses are 34 (handfull are 35, 1 36") so i am not a medium scale guy but with this body style maybe the way to go....
obviouoly these are my very first and late at night impressions/thoughts so take it easy on me boys...
Jim
Thanks for the review, Jim!
It appears you are right, just from the components this is not a $500 bass...
I just got off the phone with Seymour Duncan about an hour ago and they will not sell me pups at OEM prices for a bass that retails for less than $800. Minimum order 24 pups.
Because of that I'm introducing the JAEbird CUSTOM at $825. It has a honduras mahogany body, The SD SS4 pups, period correct Gotoh CBS style tuners, a bone nut and Ken Smith Rockmasters or equivalent strings. No upcharge for Ebony (black) finish. For more info please check cataldobasses.com (http://cataldobasses.com)
The inhouse 'Standard' orders will come with the Duncans. Future Standards will be equipped with Artec passive soapbars with aluminum covers and rings, visually they will appear the same. The Standard price remains $495 delivered. I'll be happy to install your pickups in a Standard.
Here's part of their OEM 'agreement'
Other Terms and Conditions
We strongly desire that Seymour Duncan and Basslines pickups be used on instruments with list prices equal to or greater than US$800. Antiquity and Duncan Performer pickups are not available through the OEM program. Currently, we are not accepting new customers for the Duncan Designed program. If you have a question about something that's not covered on this form, please don't hesitate to ask. The terms contained in this sheet are subject to change.
I apologize for this. I had based my selling price on the assumption that I would be getting the Duncans at OEM prices. An SS4 set retails for around $120 minimum with shipping, far too expensive for a $500 bass.

Very much looking forward to the build. I remember seeing one of your posts on TB a long time ago with a photo of all your Tbirds, capturing it and titling it "Many Birds". Glad to add one more to the flock.

Firstly awesome work. These are the nicest looking T-Birds I've seen for a long time, and great to see all the work you put in to arrive at the current version.
So I have a question: I would really like to order one of these, but at the moment pretty much everything I do requires a 5-string bass. So what I would like to know is if you would be able to make a 5-string version? I realise that it's going involve sourcing a suitable neck and a new body routing template which of course will be reflected in the cost. Anyway if this is something you are interested in building, I am 100% interested in buying!

Well that pretty much answers two of the questions I had regarding the feasibility of a 5-string version. I'll be sending an email sometime over the weekend when I've sorted out all my thoughts.
M-O-O-N, that spells moon. :D
Carlo,
Can you tell me if the Gotoh Res O Lite GB528's are reversible to make a 2 + 2 configuration?
I don't think so but I'll take a look tomorrow.
According to my 2010 Gotoh catalog, they are.
Thanks, Dave.
The size of the mounting plates might make Resolites difficult to use on a Gibson size 2+2 headstock plus the length of the shaft would look wrong to me. Hipshot Ultralites (nickel plated like the resolites, even though they're described as chrome) might be a better option IMO.

Maybe not as bad as one thinks but I do value your opinion (or else I would not have asked, thanks Carlo). The shafts are a bit fat looking for a 2 + 2 on a Gibby head but overall not too bad. These are pics of Rob's LP prototype bass.

I'm aware of issues that have been brought up elsewhere but Dave has already made clear he'd like to avoid any escalation of the issue here. I don't see anything out of line in John's post. That is his bass and he didn't do anything other than to acknowledge it with his own picture. It'd be good if we all could leave the rest of it alone now.

yeah i know and the point is you and Fang are both prolly pretty nice guys. missed communications has cost me some really fine girlfriends in the past (sigh) and that is not cool. good basses are exceedingly difficult, on the same echelon of difficulty, to come by. Dave (his honchoness in here) is pretty astute and Fang is okay as long as he gets his daily allotment of Special Kitty chunky chicken and tuna (retired people living on fixed incomes have to eat sparingly).
so double amen and stay tuned for the next blazing trailer from his sniperness (me) in another thread. ;D

Carlo has accomplished a lot since he and i first talked almost a year ago about his projects at the time. the T-Bird pup reproduction and the reviews he has gotten, esp from GOT, is refreshing to say the least. his finishes are to be respected and his originality and talent is a good thing to observe. first time in my life i am actually liking a seafoam green anything.
i will have to wait till some of my projects are done though.

PS: How'd she sound?
JAE referred to his basses as male. I agree, my basses are definitely an extension of ME as evidenced by what the Cataldo logo looks like from a few feet away. Sound through the B-15 is very satisfying, especially tuned down a 1/2 step.

Please set the new bird up for 1/2 step down tuning also. The black one will remain in std tuning and the 63 thunderbuckers for it are being shipped today

Good point. I guess, thanks to my father and his '55 Chevy Bel-Air, that I'm used to calling things "she".
Man, that thing is beautiful Carlo! From afar, I really like the way that logo sits on the headstock too. Being set up half-step down will make it perfect for my upcoming blues power trio.
Thanks again!
Glad you're liking it, Dave. Hope the "Real Thing" doesn't disappoint
The first perfect one I make, I'm quitting and keeping it. Very little danger of that happening.
Nice to see another Fiesta come off the production line!

Seriously, I get tired of seeing better versions of the same cars in Asia than are available here (rear discs on about everything, The REAL Focus almost a decade before it made it here). Glad Ford has taken the initiative. I bought my daughter a 2001 Focus with 100k on the clock for graduation in '06. Twin cam, big wheels, 5 speed, FUN CAR! It's served her well and been across the country 4 times without incident.

It's here, even came a day early. Had a bad day at work yesterday and UPS didn't help the situation, so I wasn't able to snap pics or give it a good listen yet, but I am pleased with my purchase so far.
Review to come!

Yeah, that's what I'd like to know.
The stack knob setup works great on my '61 clone, completely independent tone and volume for each pup using a pair of 200 Ohm resistors. Cuts each pup output slightly but no problem with the 'Buckers. I think I'd do the next one with a rear control cavity or relocate the front one. It doesn't make much visual sense without a pick guard attached to it.

I think it would look cool to orient it vertically like the ones on the old Telebass models - a bit of visual heritage...and quite different for a J.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Doing a rear control cavity and 3 in line close to TBird positioning would reference the pup origins.

Latest run of 5 JAEbirds. Primer coats done yesterday with temp on way to 100, 108 with heat index. No blush and Flash off additives make spraying possible. A/C in shop takes enough humidity out but requires thorough cleaning of A/C filters and condenser fins daily since no spray booth. Color coats and clear shoot today.

I need to get my 76 back from storage unit when the basement project is finished so i can get a flock shot and complete the reviews...
Notice the pickup tarnish and the jaebirds versus the bachbird/lull. Clearly the jaebirds have seen much more action and a few outdoor shows in the humidity. The northeast hads been brutal thisa summer. Now they look like they are properly aged somehow???

now for you boutique bass haters - LOOK AWAY.
reminded me of an original series Star Trek episode
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac102/desantisjn/Gibson/jaebirds6.jpg)
Fodera Yin Yang standard - my first bolt on Fodera. Alder body under the maple. very crisp sounding, incredibly clean, incredible action and no fret noise somehow... Just traded in my original 84 Fodera 6 string towards this one.
Got to run to a meeting so I will sign on later for comments/reviews of the new bass and my very inprecise aftermarket tbird pups review.
Good to be back at work - did i just say that???
Here is my take on the pickups.
Firstly let me say this is not a real test as the conditions are suspect to say the least as described below.
Test was done on my NAD ampeg B15T. a very underpowered (no way it is true 100 watts) and not one of ampeg shinning moments. But a ok little rig to keep near my workbench. secondly volume played was not very loud as whole family was around but i moved out of workbench area to avoid other things adding sound...
More importantly the basses are all a little different in various ways.
Jaebird one is poplar body (i believe) maple neck, rotosounds with about 8-10 gigs on them several outside in the humidity, 63 thunderbuckers, neck pup slightly moved toward the neck..
Bachbird - Mahog body ???? or mystery meat with a mahog veneer, mahog and rosewood neck, set neck not bolt on , Labella Hard Rockin string ) IMHO the best ROCK strings made - great piano like tones , also have them on my 76 bicentenial. Strings are probably 8 months or older but have never been played since installed. Mike Lull pickup...
Jaebird Too... - Mahog body with maple neck, D'Addario RW strings, couple of gigs on them including outside.., 66 thunderbuckers.
here is my take on the pups. test was done with all neck pups only at first. Only finger style, no pick
63 thunderbuckers - Readings 7.62 N & 7.88 Bridge, blended 3.96. Best deep bassy tones (could be placement as well as the strings) little weaker on the treble side (strings for sure) and scooped nicely in the middle. fast tarnish - shiney but yellowed - very different from my 76 pups dull tarnishing.. Bridge pup fixed the treble side when turned on. Great sound when playing with fingers up by the neck... As usual i differ from most of you "gibson" guys - So far these are my favorite of the 3.....
Lull - 7.97 reading very solid lows and best treble side (strings help alot...) nice scooped middle, Very clear sounding , more of a modern tone to me. Very similar to the 63 thunderbuckers but a little louder. Also a little clearer which i would say is the strings versus the rotos. still shiney like brand new..
66 Thunderbuckers. 8.33 N and 8.72 bridge, 4.31 blended. Very mid range driven sound (IIRC overwound pups tend to be that way) weakest on the treble side. more bass and mids. IN YOUR FACE.... may have to break out the heavy stuff to get a true tubey thickness sans the "gain" control issue. starting to tarnish
Provisos
Clearly this is a flawed test and so i will change out the D'addarios very soon and rotos too and try again. Fingers only so none of this holds true to you picksters....Test done right after spending some time fooling with my new fodera so i had on my R&B and jazz ears.......Also this was thru a small SS head without any change to the gain and volume between basses so i was not getting the best out of each just a neutral position. I have an outdoor classic rock (how i hate those words...) show this weekend on a pier so humidity may be a real factor. Weather permitting i will do a better taste test with a least a hybrid head (hartke or eden) and real volume and get some tubey grind. thinking about a 2 Ev15 cab plus?????
Jim
Thanks for the comparison! SRO's in your 2-15 cab? I used to have an old Kustom (tolexed, not roll & pleat) with a pair of the SRO's that really rocked.
Great shots of your brace of JAEbirds, Jim. Look forward to hearing a same string shootout on the various pups and wood combos especially compared to your Lull equipped BaCH.
#0022 goes to Ken today(Spiritbass). I'm really digging the pearl guard and black screws, both were his idea.

Rock Masters are actually re-branded GHS Super Steels. Not sure about the Burners, but I wouldn't doubt they are Boomers. I used Super Steels for a LONG time, until I accidentally discovered Dean Markley SR2000s. Fantastic string with ridiculously long life.

I don't know about the Rock Masters, but the Burners aren't Boomers. Burners' feel and composition is very different and much more upper midrange focused where Boomers are a little lower and more nasal sounding.
QuoteI used Super Steels for a LONG time, until I accidentally discovered Dean Markley SR2000s. Fantastic string with ridiculously long life.
For steel strings, I LOVE SR2000's, but every player I know always assumes "Dean Markley" only means those godawful Blue Steels, aka the 'Dead in Five Minutes' strings. I bought a few sets of SR2000's from Steve Barr in the final days of the Pit and they sound awesome on my Marcus Miller Jazz.
I've tried SR2000's, and for my money, GHS contact core super steels are better. But better is completely subjective. I should say that the contact cores have a barely noticeable high end boost over the SR2000's that's pretty much negligible, but I've had problems with two sets of SR2000's in a row where I get a warbling sound if I don't lower my pickups (and I play with my pickups lowered pretty well,) and I've never had that problem with the contact cores. Nowhere near as bad as the shrill sound you get when you try to use DR Longnecks with a bass that doesn't have a through body stringing design, but it was there.

That's what I was told quite a few years ago by my buddy who owns a music store. I believed it based on the gauges. Now that I look at their site, the ones I used to use are now listed as "Custom balanced round wounds - the original Ken Smith bass string", not Rock Masters. Maybe they changed?

LOL!
No matter who makes 'em for Ken Smith, sound and price are right for me. I used GHS Boomers in the early 80s as Roto substitutes so I'm not that difficult to please. But a recent set did sound to me as PBG describes them.

After doing 25 JAEbird bodies I've almost got it right so I found someone who can make them better. He's in a secure underground location somewhere in the midwest. This is an example of his work, one piece Honduras Mahogany...and when I say 'Honduras' I mean it. This body came from a 30 year old 14 foot long, 22 inch wide, 2 inch thick board. It weighs 5.1 lbs and will make a 9lb perfectly balanced JAEbird.

Thanks, Tom. I've learned a lot in the last year, not the least being how to shoot bass porn :). Having the bodies CNC'd has made it a lot easier. I grain filled this one using drywall mud. It works great, costs almost nothing, cleans up with water and is impervious to lacquer solvent. I'm ambivalent about having painted such a beautiful piece of wood but feel pretty good about the quality of the paint job.

Damn. Simply damn.
That's a level of bass playing that some of us can only marvel at. WELL played, and obviously a beautiful, well set up instrument.
Sounds great!
It's inspiring to me, I send 'em out and there's always a question mark until you hear from the customer. That was Jon's first and only take. He set up the bass to suit his playing, I had the action super low and he likes it a lot higher. Gotta give Steve his due on the pickups!

Looks great, and the same for the sound. And I really dig the way that guy is playing The Who's tunes. And then I come to think of John E, and what an imaginative player he was!!!
Wow Jon, outstanding playing! Blue Eyes has always been a fave of mine. It has a kick ass bridge.
As a misbegotten guitar player, I have a hard time doing representative bass clips for my pickups, it is very nice to see them in the hands of someone who can do great things with them.
Thanks for making my pickups and Cataldo's basses sound so great. Tho I suspect that if I handed you a 2X4 with old banjo strings on it, you'd make that sound great too.
Mr ThunderBucker, thank YOU for making this dream a reality for me. I built a FenderBird myself a few years ago, and I was never satisfied with the Gibson Ceramic Humbuckers on it. Once I found the JaeBird and that it had Replica 66 T bird P/U's, I was SOLD. These pickups are EXACTLY the sound I was looking for! Can't say enough good things about them really..
All you folks reading this thread, really need to check these basses/pickups out. Worth every penny I paid for them!!!

1/4 " channel base/reinforcement fits inside the 1/2" x 3/4" angle which as been cut down slightly on the 1/2" leg width so the channel bears directly against the body. It gets tacked in with superglue and drilled thru for the mounting screws

Need to make the next one for ThunderBucker's Epi FenderBird and get his input. Because this bridge fits flush against the body it's easy to get low action with minimum neck angle.
I didn't realize you were making your own bridges. That's really slick.
Back in Black. This one is going to Mike Conte, bassist for 'Who's Next'.

63 or 66 pups??
'66, no subtlety here! I prefer the '63 but am in a definite minority. ThunderBucker Max is on the way, we'll see how that does. It's a bit darker and louder than the '66.
Wow. Those new bridges really look great! I can't wait to have my ducks in a row so I can order that JAEbird I've been wanting.

Wow Carlo another shinny happy bass.
I thought you had airbrushed the trees on there until I recognised a reflection.
Beautiful!
Thanks, guys. Mike got his bass yesterday, so far he's digging it and raving about the sound...sometimes I think I'm only making a platform for Steve's pickups ;D
To me the current bridge/tailpiece were the only visual part of the bass that needed upgrading. Functionally there's really no difference between old and new.
I'm really looking forward to building some new stuff in 2012.

Should be possible. I'm testing the production prototype 66 EX in my 2012 NR Fiver. Very healthy B string response.

I finally got around to gigging JAEbird #4 last night wearing the pair of 66 Thunderbuckers I bought a while back. We play most Sunday nights at this venue (in wig and jumpsuit-free mode we're the house band at the only casino in Sydney, playing blues rock). The venue provides backline, which is an SVT-3 Pro (not my favourite amp) into a SVT-610HLF (which I do like), so I'm very familiar with this amp and cab after playing here for a number of weeks already.
Coincidentally, without any "what are you going to wear" conversation at all, one of our guitarists brought his Firebird along, so we certainly did look very cool last night. But, the sound! I'm definitely going to be gigging my JAEbird as often as I can now - pure awesomeness.
And here's some video. These are such gorgeous looking basses.

Hey, nice vocals Mark! You have the Bourbon and Camel rasp thing down pat.
Funny thing is, I never put much, any, thought into what you would sound like if you sang but for some reason you don't sound how I figured you would ;D

LOL, not bad for someone who has never smoked. I play in bands with some great singers, so I don't get the opportunity very often myself these days.
i've been working on my blues voice, a pack of camel non filters a day for about 40 years or so. i think i'm there.
Sweet Mark, nice job! Love them blues!

No I am not planning to move to move to MA. They play NY a lot, as far West as Seneca Niagara Casino. They make good money good enough for me to make the drive to the East coast if need be.

You must have at least one NR that needs a refin. A BaCH with a repaint and pickup(s) upgrade would do the job...there MIGHT be more options ;)
WHO are you kidding... (good luck!) ;D
Yeah, good luck dude. I would LOVE a Who tribute gig if the $$$ were there.
good luck.. May even be close enough for me to get out and see you . i don live actually in the middle....
So Scott, did you get the Who gig????
Nope never even got a audition :( Kinda ticks me off they contacted me full well knowing where I live, they freaked about the distance.
yeah that sux
not sure if this will open as it is in facebook and i am clueless. Anyway 2 childhood buds that moved to tampa FL came up a few weeks ago and we decided to get together and play in a studio for the first time in about 6+ years. singer hadan iphone. Mistakes a plenty  and shitty iphone recording but it was on my side so JAEbird #2 is nice in the mix. 63 thunderbuckers which i prefer contrary to most of you. GK 800 with 2 15's and 2 10's. Its too bad the zep stuff and hendrix didn't record as that actually came out pretty good as those tunes are burned into our brains.
Staten Island/brooklyn buds.... so jersey shore. I find it hard to believe i grew up down there.
and when did i get so damn fat  must have been the holidays

I do like having one of each. I pick which set of thunderbuckers based on the gig/band and my mood and amp choice that day. Always been that way with me - p or j or PJ choices so now i get to pick my second bass which is usually a HB.
Kind of like a woman and her shoes.... :-\
actually thinking about a fender thunderbucker and a fiver..... waiting to hear the X pups although i doubt i will like the extra grind unless it is mid heavy for some of my tube amps. Thanks to you guys, especially Scott and that RIG, i have been collecting some more tube stuff. ( 2 b15S, b15N, fixed a 1971 blue univox and most recently 2 musicman hd 130s. So recent they are both in transit.. One of feeebay , other GC used being shipped to local store with original RH212 cab. I do remember liking them in the late 70's though i was a ampeg (SVT and V-4B) only guy back then. Always felt they were the next generation of the bassman amps that could cut it. hopefully my memory was right or i just bought 2 guitar amps....Clapton used them back then.
So were are my blue shoes?
Carlo, I was in the studio last night with my original rock band and my JAEBird, so soon I'll be able to post some great examples of how the Thunderbuckers sound. The bits I listened to last night straight off the desk sounded great!

By non popular demand, JAEbird Fiver with raised center section. I used the pin router mostly with this screwed into the back for a guide.

That settles it my next bass is Pelham blue NR II from Cataldo.
Thanks, Guys! This one almost didn't get to go. The UK has stopped insurance on Priority Mail packages from the USA. Steve had to send a set of ThunderBuckers to England Express Mail to get insurance, cost $85 for less than a pound. Then he found a company, Shipsurance, which does insure Priority Mail. I'd almost resigned myself to keeping it. Oh well, someday. :)

Same here. I think it looks great without the guard.
if this is the last of the series 2 bridges, what have you got going for the next series? or did i read that statement wrong?
Series 3 TP is a 1 piece nickel silver channel instead of NS angle over an aluminum channel. Still has brass reinforcing tubes. It means Steve gets to do all the work, except polishing. Pretty sure he'll be offering bridge/tailpiece combos for sale as well as TBird hand rest and bridge covers.
That's the basic deal, I design/consult on stuff I want and convince Steve to engineer and build it. He gets to market it and I get to buy it a little cheaper than anyone else. So far it's worked out well.
Sounds like a plan Carlo. I look forward to seeing what you have in mind come forward.
I apologize for dropping the ball with Steve on those hand rests and please tell him so but I am ecstatic that you and he picked up on making them. I look forward to getting one or two of them myself. I seemed to get behind over Christmas and just when I thought I could move on them the fall happened.
I am glad to tell you that the leg is healed and I am slowly getting back to 100%. The MRSA and the gangrene floating around in my bloodstream still have me knocked down a little but every day is better. I know you ask about every time we talk on the phone and I thank you.
The blue JAE looks fine but that green 5 string thingy is just tits as far as I am concerned. ;) ;)
I came up with a cockeyed idea that the bends could be done using a sheet metal brake (Steve's fault, he bought a new one and said he had to find some things to use it for). He's pretty much figured out how to do it. So no problem.
Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery. The new plates look great!

Thanks, I've had a lot of correspondence with the guy over the last 15 months, he's OK. It just got to the point where I knew nothing would satisfy him, even a total refin. He also wanted a set of ThunderBuckers as replacement for the SDs because he got a cut from one of the covers...and he wanted them for free. Most of the response on TB has been civil. As they say, any publicity is good publicity. I'm a lot less thin skinned than the last time. No matter what I'll continue to do what I want to do.
I can't believe that guy dredged this up again. Your right he will never be satisfied. I surprised he isn't suing you for cutting himself on the topper.
Different guy. JK checked in but he was very civil. I shouldn't have brought him into the latest thread.
OTOH, I'll be 66 next month...you can ALL get off my lawn ;D

Thanks, the tailpiece is made from .040 sheet Nickel Silver (about the same thickness as a vintage Fender bent metal bridge plate) by Steve. The compression 'risers' are 1/4" brass tubing. The new bridge channel will be made from the same NS. The one shown is aluminum.
Looks very nice, "airy" but sturdy at the same time.

I loved his comment on the second last page that he's been playing and setting up basses for 20 years, but had never encountered a truss rod that adjusts at the body end of the neck - I guess he's done a great job of avoiding Fender basses for 20 years. Seriously?

Talkbass is littered with f***ing tools. I get so pissed at all the finger pointing and "correcting" some of these douche's so self righteously employ when in reality they don't know squat. Carlo doesn't need those asshole's endorsment to validify himself, their ignorance and arrogance nulls any credibility they could have had.

I guess that means he thinks Carlo is responsible for the decisions of Leo Fender, Peter Cook and Allparts. :-\
By a happy coincidence Tom in Dorset UK (LPB/maple/TBR '66 pups) and Chad in Chicago (Ebony, B&B maple, MAX pups) both received their basses yesterday and they're happy...or they lie very well.
I try to take the TBers with a grain of salt. They're young and dumb. The less they know the better, it leaves the good stuff for those who appreciate it.
The only comment on the thread that really bothered me was from a guy in St. Augustine (about 60 miles from here) who made the comment, "I don't like Cataldo as a last name." It's actually my first name but I'm still considering tracking him down and beating his ass. Preferably with a '51 Precision adjustment at the heel baseball bat.
There sure are some weird people out there...

Yes, the same strings that you shipped it with.

You say that like it's a BAD thing. ???
zombie strings.
Un Dead... doomed to play forever... ;D
I'm not going to hijack Carlo's thread except to say (again) that flatwounds aren't exempt from the laws of physics.

No problem, Dave! Here's something more on topic.

Thanks! I've relearned everything I used to know about finishing, a lot easier to get the right result now. It helped to do 3 black basses at once.
What a great thread. Just read the whole thing and I love these basses!
Chris, I have two of Carlos basses and am scheming for another. I highly recommend him.
Peter Cook's spiritual successor (and I own a PC)
What's the price point on these? Or should I make inquiry on the website?
This is his thread (dadagoboi) so you can pm him here or on his site...
I prefer to discuss pricing thru the website email, jaebird@cataldobasses.com
Some are shocked at how much they cost these days, some pleasantly surprised. My target for customer builds this year is 10. I'm on track for that, hopefully it will give me the time to do some more experimentation. A short scale 8 string is in the works and a 12er. I have the necks for both and will post the builds when I get to them. Just shipped ExplorerBird #2; next builds are a REV42, JAE42 and G8R41 (for Rex Diablo).

3 for me. First black one, modified white one and 5 string NR seafoam green one. all are (were?) on the cataldo website. They just sound awesome. FWIW I normally play foderas but these babies play and sound tremendous. Necks are great.
IMHO best deal out there.......

The NR and MAX are still up. My photography has improved since #002 so it's been retired from the site.
Carlo, one of these days I'll get a good quality action pic of #004 so you can add me and it to the gallery.
