Great pics!  What venue were you playing at?

Nice (ima gonna guess) Traynor amp head (looks kinda  like a  Custom Special with no badge, more knobs and Garnet style silk screening.  Only seen that colour 'grille' cloth on Traynors and Musicmans though it coulda been replaced).
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (drummer and bassist of Deep Purple, Jake!)

yes Traynor but not a "custom special" it's a YGL-3A actually a guitard head. not great for guitar but kills with the bass. the 2nd and 3rd pics were at St. Vitus a really cool metal bar here in Brooklyn and the 1st was at Fat Baby in NYC

Fat Baby?  Is that a newer bar?  I been away from NYC for about 5 years now.  I just looked it up and saw that it's on Rivington.  Is that area cleaned up now?  It used to be that "Avenue A you might survive, but on Rivington you're gonna die..."

yes sadly they did clean up that area, but it was never that bad to begin with. i don't know much about that place. the time we played was my only time there. place was meh. but we played that gig with Pure Hell (the first all black punk band from the 70's) which was cool, especially since my band had a black punk singer so it really meant alot to him.

...THUD...

Part of the original Grand Funk Railroad sound was the combination of Mel Schacher's Fender bass with the Guild Humbucker added and the West amps he played through.  Kids....sheesh.

I may be wrong, however.  I was under the impression that it was the Guild pickup he used, but it could be a Gibson.  I need an expert here.

He used a Gibson chrome (or nickel?) Mudbucker. Gary's photo is pre mod (original Jazz Bass pup). IIRC he modified it after the recording of the second self titled album.

GFRR's heyday was 1970-75. I can't fault anyone in the +/- 40 age group for not knowing the details of a long gone band. Even bassists.
