New G-3!

I called Gibson today and then TKL, who makes their cases. No cases for the G-3 are available. Turns out TKL only made enough cases for the Grabber IIs. Of course TKL will make me one for $450...  :P

The main reason I want a case is because of the enormous headstock and antler-sized tuners, but the round bass sits perfectly on the rear strap button when sitting in the gig bag, which makes me nervous.

@Denis: The Hiscox STD-EBP Case should do the job for you for a pleasing price. It fits the Ripper so it would fit the G-3.

Denis, if I may add, errmm ..., an, looking for the word here ...,  appendix to all this: I can dig out one of my old Grabber cases and see whether the newie G-3 fits in it and then proceed to send it over the pond. Ja?

Heh, "appendix".  ;D

That certainly would be worth trying, Uwe, now that you have the new G-3 on hand to try out! 

My gut says that the new G-3 headstock is WAY larger than the '70s models, especially with the tuners poking out, and won't fit in the old Grabber cases. I think it's the same headstock/neck as used on the new Flying V basses.

Let me know what you discover and we'll maybe figure something out.

Just watched that vid on the fat-bottomed girls thread. Definitely a new one, but it looks almost red, or either the burst is very dark. Looks great!

Re the music: I like the quirky 80ies New Wave vibe it has and the singer is cute, but can anybody tell me why they need two additional guitarists bar-chording throughout (plus the bassist and the lead guitarist playing the riff) to get that sound?  :mrgreen:

Re the bass: Sorry, Denis, definitely an old (albeit late) one. The giveaways are at 0:24/25 of the vid where you see a bolt-on neck/body juncture, not a set neck one, and at 1:36 where you don't see the holy immaculate three point, but the original G-3 bridge or a replacement for it. As well as visible throughout: a three-ply pg the modern ones don't feature.

What threw you off, Denis, was probably the ebony fretboard, but the final run of Grabbers and G-3s that came out in the early eighties had ebony boards, sometimes even three-piece maple necks and relatively often that CAR color en vogue at the time (I own one of those).

I stand corrected! What threw me off was the black headstock, which looked much more similar to the new G-3s than the original ones.

Played all three at the last rehearsal (just keyboards, a drum machine and me). My 77 maple board G-3, my 1982 final run CAR ebony board with pup combination mod (front and back, but no middle in one setting) and the 2012 newie.

- When it comes to reckless snappiness on the brink of sounding trashy, the 77 maple board wins out.

- The 82 is not quite as hilariously clamoring for attention, but still quite a bit in a more grown-up way.

- The 2012 has none of that "look at me, I'm a bass and I want to be heard too"-first impression, but once you play it a while you realize that is has sublow frequencies the other two can't approach. What they have to offer more is low mids which makes them sound more raucous, the 2012 is more scooped in that department and that gives it a touch of WAL/boutique bass. Its highs are also more hifi/lisssping presssence, but not sterile. Stingray and "angry piano" P Bass fans should be in ecstasy at their first listen. It's amazing what they can do without a 9 volt battery these days.   :mrgreen:

2012 has better upper register sustain, but the 77 and 82 are no slouches in that department either.

PS: Just bought the new Paramore CD - really liked what I heard in the context of this thread.

That song is kind of a departure for them. They typically do more hard rock type of songs.

Most of their music is like this. I enjoy them. Hayley Williams has a great set of pipes. She can really sing.
