I've had one Gibson that was abysmal new: a midnight blue Money, where the fret job had obviously never been completed. But I've also had a new Ric where the bridge pup didn't work (faulty wiring) and a new Fender Jazz where the truss rod wouldn't turn.

Makes me wonder if people are more likely to accept faults from one manufacturer than another.

A similar case in point (though not 100% identical): a friend went to an industrial design show in Detroit back in the 1990s. He met a guy who worked at the plant where the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser were built on the same production line by the same people. Chrysler received exponentially more complaints about the Eagle and the Plymouth (both perceived as American built) than the Mitsubishi (perceived as Japanese built).

Reminds me of an urban legend I heard years ago where GMC trucks received better quality control than their Chevy counterparts.  :-\

I'd forgotten all about that one.

I've come to expect some sloppiness with Gibson, less than perfect fins, fret ends stickling out after short exposure to German climate. I can live with that, also with a defunct pup once in a while. The bad fret job on the Money was a howler as was the frozen Fender truss rod. My Grabber II's truss rod ain't great either, the bell was so snug in the cavity, I had to route that considerably deeper plus use washers under the bell for sufficient pull. Only a matter of time until it will give me real trouble, even though the Grabber II sounds majestic.

No kidding.  When I sold Chevy trucks between 1978-80, occasionally we'd get one in with GMC emblems on the cab...had to change them out.

Anyone who thinks a GMC is anything but a Chevy with different trim is fooling themselves, and has been for more than 30 years.

Ground hog day was a while ago Uwe  ;)
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Now that I've had this a few months I have to say that has made it into my top 5 favorite basses. I absolutely love this thing. :)

With sadness I've despatched Uwe's G-3 today, (yes, it's been with me awhile, school schedule, taking care of Miss Peacock and a rather unexpected operation on my foot have delayed it's departure.) and even tho I'm devoutly a Thunderbird player I have to say again what a really great bass this is.
Play it in excellent health Uwe, many thanks for the extended test drive!

I was almost hoping you'd forget that it was here visiting me  ;)
Re the foot, I had to have the entire nail and a bit of flesh removed from my right big toe - It was extremely unpleasant, for awhile it looked rather like a skinned rabbit's head.
Thanks again, that's one very cool bass  :)

My Doc (ex Navy guy whose last name is Sargent) prescribed a single Valium just so I could get in the door and deal with him administering the local painkiller...........9 injections around the toe.

No open toe shoes this Spring

I damaged my toe nail once lifting something heavy around on a beach and of course the toe nail died off. It took ages to regrow, but it regrew properly (looked pretty sick for a while) and after the initial phase I had no pain even where the now unprotected nailbed (is that the American term too for the skin underneath the nail?) was. People would say: "That must hurt!" and I'd say "Not anymore, it don't!"

In truth, Mark, those peep toe platforms never looked that cool on you anyway!
