'chrome don't get you home' is popular in biker and automotive circles. never heard the phrase in a militaty context. i see the military as mostly 'chromeless'.

Yep, "chromeless" is the point with military vehicles. Since I have two ex-army motorcycles and won't have to deal with chrome I can honestly say for my bikes it's non-value added and won't help the bikes function: it's all for looks.
