Gibby Moderne short scale ,so far..
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:22:07 PM »
Im going with 2 Dimarzio model G's, a 3 point bridge, toggle w/ no surround, V-V-T

Neck I had to add some wood to the sides and used a  tracing from a Moderne headstock for the shape

Im hoping to do the strawberry blond configuration that Doc used on his Jr,or I may do natural & blond  if the grain of the neck and body are close when I grain fill. Rosewood board with MOP dots

That's a cool idea, keep us updated on the progress.

In a side note; I always thought that Gibson should've called the Moderne the "Mantis" instead because it rather looks like a Praying Mantis

Cool project!
What kind of wood are you using? Is that Honduras Mahogany or is it Korina?

Mahogany. The guy I got the body from  screwed up the bridge route & had to patch . He had planned a natural  finish. Im going to try to work some magic on the glue lines to see if I can pull off the natural finish. Its not lookin good but I have to try. You can see the lines in the pic. Otherwise its a very nice layout. I have enough mahog planks to make 4 or 5. If my pending interview does not produce a job, I may have to resort to doing knock- offs.

I like this so much, I might have to try and pull of my favorite weird modern bass design:

Please don't start about the Gretsch Billy Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Bass. I just need one, but it's 3K...

Yeah, these funky looking basses are intriguing.  The rare Guild Thunderbird is another I'd like to recreate some day too.

I was tinkering with the projects the other night and the Modern body has rounded edges already so I may have trouble doing the top blond and the back strawberry(gibby red). I could retop it but would that be worth the trouble?

I love that red bird . real crazy retro. I like the fingernail  inlays on those fretboards

Did anyone see this mini-Moderne bass on ebay?  Kinda cute.

Your project looks much more interesting, though.  I love the look of pointy instruments that aren't full-force metal looking.

Yeah ,Ive had them ,NIB, for several years. I just could not get beyond the color. They will  be fine on this baby. I should flip one of them around like an LP or do the Peter Green  thing and confuse everyone

Im back at it due to employment woes ,however I did finally fit the neck . I will post more neck close ups once I do some sanding at the joint. The body had been routed wrong for one of the pups and block filled . . The thought of doing natural "korina" like the above pic  was out (which is why I liked Docs  cherry vanilla as an alternative).
I sat one afternoon ,put the pup & surround in it and realized that there was only a small amt of the fill block showing.  So i proceeded to make some xacto induced grain  holes of varied shape around the glue lines ,tinkered with some grain filler and I may be able to  do the "korina look after all
