Darn, I just heard about it. A great songwriter and bandleader. 1977, German Rockpalast on TV, was the first time I ever heard of him and The Heartbreakers and was immediately mesmerized.

At that point in my life, I really preferred harder music, but the quality of the songs and his voice really gripped me. Plus he and The Hearbreakers looked great.

Tom Petty's preference for a good joint is well-documented (I saw him a few years ago and he and the band were stoned out of their minds, yet played flawlessly with the widest grins imaginable   ;D ;D ;D ), so keeping in mind that in Germany a piece of hash is termed "a piece", I'll salute with: Unrest with a piece!

I'll always remember that day in May 1987 when I met him at the Capitol Plaza Toys R Us of all places.  I was shopping with my then 3 year old daughter and I saw him with his daughter and a large fellow pushing the shopping cart.  I went up to him after I saw another fellow talking with him.  I shook his hand and said "you're great" in my awkwardness.  But I told him how I'd listened to him since his second record and mention the FM movie which made him groan a bit.  But he was so nice and autographed my South Austin Music business card.

He asked if I was going to the show the following night and I said that I couldn't get tickets. (Couldn't afford them at the time was more like it). He turned to the big dude and said in that voice, "get his name and give him some tickets".  Wonderful show with Del Fuegos and Georgia Satellites opening.  R.I.P. to a true rocker and a great guy.

My power went out for no reason.  I turned on the shortwave radio I use for weather emergencies and was shocked to learn of the news about Tom Petty.  Quite a loss.  One of those rock stars who never seemed to let fame go to his head.
It's not those who write the laws that have the greatest impact on society.  It's those who write the songs.

CBS has backtracked.

LAPD clarifies it cannot confirm Tom Petty's death

Other sources say there has been no brain activity since he was found and that he has been taken off life support.

If they found him not breathing and brain-dead, I don't know what to wish for.  :-\
