Klammer's downhill run was amazing and scary...even on a 13" B&W TV (I was 15 at the time). So glad that the footage of that 1976 run is available on the net. That run, along with USA hockey beating the Soviets in 1980 are my two all-time favorite Olympic moments.

Great video quality for 1980.

Thanks for all the kind replies.  I'll pass along the wishes to the boys.
Hopefully things go well, but like I told Nick: This might be the greatest thing you ever do in your life - enjoy and soak in every minute.

Interesting side note for anyone using wireless:  I bought a wireless IEM system for the band, which will allow them to bring in a backing track and click for drums.  The guitarist came up last week and tested them along with Nick and they absolutely love what it does for them.

We found out a few days ago that OFCOM requires a license to use wireless RF in the UK for the 500-700 MHZ range, and apparently it's heavily enforced.  Every gig (address, time, etc.) needed to be registered.  After we paid, we got a 4 page license schedule with the ranges for each gig.  I/We had no idea.  Just passing that along, but you probably already knew all this.

Learning...

Again, thanks for the kind replies.

Thanks Chris

Hello all,
Been a few years since I've posted anything, but I thought I'd share something pretty cool.

Next week, my youngest takes his band (Kaguu) to the UK on their first ever tour.  They're a Math-Rock/Progressive instrumental trio.
To think these guys physically met for the first time at our house in North Carolina (the guitarist and bassist are from Mexico) last June is astonishing.
They played for the first time ever on our deck for neighbors and friends - it was a blast.

They've put out a couple of EP's (recorded and mixed upstairs at the house), and they played two small festivals in Mexico this year - their first ever gigs.
From those shows, they were invited to play two festivals in the UK in August, as well as a 6-city-in-7-nights mini tour with 2 other bands between the festivals.

It's been a whirlwind, and we're awfully proud of these guys. They put together their 1st EP strictly by file sharing, and Nick did most of the mixing upstairs as we learned how to use the equipment we started to acquire. I've learned a ton about production and especially about mic'ing and recording drums just by helping out where I could.

Anyway, my wife and I are going over to see the first festival (Guildford) next week and the first three shows in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester, and then we have to head back to the US.  We'll be lucky enough to rent a car and drive up to Scotland for a couple of days.

Nick also turns 21 while he's on that mini tour, which is pretty cool.  As a surprise, we're sending his brother over there on his birthday to meet them in Brighton. He'll be their driver (to get them from Brighton to Bristol for the ArcTanGent festival).
Keeping this a secret has been a chore.

Anyway, just another boring dad post - just wanted to share.
If anyone is going to be in Guildford, UK for the weekend of 2-3 August for RADAR Festival, look me up - I'm the broke guy smiling ear-to-ear.

I agree with Rob.

Hey, Steve, did you ever go for that Ripper project?

Hey Denis - Nope. Missed it by a few hours.
I snoozed and I loozed.

Don't know if this is good or bad price, but thought I'd post it here in case someone was interested.

I rehabbed a '73 a few years ago from a project I got off Craigslist. Got it for $250, stripped the hideous paint off it to find it was a natural finish originally. Installed Seymour Duncans and required the 4-way switch so I could use each pup independently.
It was a fun project!

Thanks for the info and great pics, Denis.  Always nice to have a local expert around.
The Ripper is somewhere near Sanford, and I'm going to see how much he's willing to deal.
I also have my eye on another bass purchase, and I'd like to pull off the 'ol two-fer (without getting caught by "homeland security").

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate all the great advice, tips and hints.
If I can finish up two current projects quickly, I may just jump on this Ripper project.
It looks like fun, and I have an awesome place to go in case I get stuck somewhere.  Thanks LBO!

Gibson Basses / Ripper project - questions
October 31, 2017, 10:46:52 PM
All,

I don't know much about Gibson basses, but I'm curious if the folks here think this 70's Gibson Ripper bass project is worth the initial investment.
I'm a tinkerer and like projects, but getting this back to mid 70's OEM parts might be an expensive venture.
It looks like I'd need, at a minimum, new pickups (possibly full electronics), bridge and tuners.
A quick search on eBay shows me 70's era tuners running at nearly $80 apiece and a 3-pt bridge at $225
Pickups, pots, jack, etc. might be hard to come by.

Just curious the thoughts of the Gibson experts:

One of my favorite shows of all time was getting to sit on the lawn at Merriweather Post Pavilion and see J. Geils Band open for the Talking Heads.
J. Geils joined them onstage for the encore and it was amazing.

I was introduced to J. Geils when Bloodshoot appeared and probably still have that 8-track somewhere in a box.  They were a cool band.

I met the owner/operator of Krappy a couple years back at a small festival in Raleigh where I was running sound.
Very nice guy.

BTW, I made that bass sound like it had 3-strings!

Yeah, I hate the fact that I keep posting about fallen musical idols.
John Wetton improved everything he touched, in my opinion.
Sad news.

Sad news.  I absolutely wore out The Hoople record when I was a kid.
Born Late '58 will always be a favorite.
