The Outpost Cafe / Happy Fourth Of July over the Pond...

Have a great day guys, and don't over-do the beers and burgers... ;)

Honest... I couldn't help myself... some dark, primeval upwelling occurred and before I knew I was doing it, it was done...

My daughter exclaimed to my wife what I had done and said, "He's done what...?" (we had my inlaws round which probably saved me) to which I tried to explain, but failed...

I made a swift departure and went off to see the results of my sins...

hmm... a slight tweek and she'll fit so I can wait on a case...

Well... got myself a black Squier 20th anniversary Jazz for what I consider to be a bargain-basement price (£62/$93)... and took a 90 mile round trip to collect... came with no strings or case, but what do you expect for the price... all looked reasonable... scratchplate (triple sandwich) had obviously had something on it and a white bar is visible centrally, which may polish out...

... too late in the evening to run up properly... gonna have to wait for the morning... honest, it's not a grimace, it's teeth holding on to a pick...

Strung her up... initial overview is very positive... the setup was well out - all saddles were well forward of intonation (quickly sorted) and a look at the neck showed a bow, but put up with that for the evening (saved the digging for tools for today) ... the truss-rod nut was easy to move, even loose, and carefully gave a 1/2 turn which has nicely straightened out - relief is quite even now... minor adjustment required to the G saddle and next up was the sound-check...

... which was very positive...

Not played one for around 27 years; Roshina finds this the nicest bass she's tried, but here's the thing... is this a true bargain and worth playing with...?
I had an idea to do a homage to that (ridiculously priced) '64 gold-sparkle that keeps showing up, also she has the same sized pups (is the pole-lineup that much of an issue) so is it worth considering the smaller neck pup, and a new scratchplate, or just live with it, or a Mudbucker  (a-la-Melvin S) or re-use the neck pup a-la-Berry/Tractor)...

... or do I leave well alone and just play... :vader: :rimshot:

Jackie would prefer my (earlier) idea of doing up and selling on, but...

Gibson Basses / Thunderbird dimensions for comparison please...
« on: June 11, 2010, 12:51:06 PM »
My Peter Cook was obviously influenced by the original article, but how closely... I'm satisfied that her neck is based on a "D" profile Precision so that is sorted, but what about the rest...?

The cut-away is much deeper, obviously, but would one or more of you guys and gals be kind enough to get the tape-measure out and supply some dimensions for the following points... a 60's and a '76 if possible...

1 - fin to horn
2 - fin to other lower edge
3 - widest point between the points
4 - narrowest point on the waist
5 - lower left to top right
6 - centre of bridge pin to nut

Curiosity, this one...

Potentially going to dip my toes and watching some items...

Anyone know anything about Vester...? (I know they folded, that's all) Are they any good...? Fender seemed to think so...

The Peter Cook "FLAME" bass - est £15-20K - P28 lot 172 - reputedly used on TOTP in the early seventies (although I cannot find footage) where JAE used a matching flame red/yellow suit - somebody have that footage...?

The 1962 white "SLAB" Precision - est £8-10K - P22 lot 136 - this is reputedely one of his earliest instruments with the Who, originally sunburst - provenance is an accompanying letter from JAE...

Gibson Basses / X-ray of an RD Artist pup - reference info
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:34:52 PM »
I did this for curiosity value, really...

I was working at one of our sites that had heavy x-ray facilities (a company that delivers to "the world on time") for cargo and asked a favour, so my "peeled" pup (for my Peter Cook) went through...

the machine "stacks" images, which is why both images are on the same screen shot...

the colour-change facility enables users to differentiate between materials - the image appears "compressed" as it was sitting on the cable protuding through the base of the pup...

this is a side-on view...

The construction appears to show the two bobbins and a central raised bar - to the base is what appears to be a connecting plate where the wire leaves the potting...

Some of you will remember this horror story, but for those that don't this is a link to my original posting which will give you the seriously gory details...

http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=1988.0

The original chrome bridge is presently esconsed on Scott's new Ripper and a black one sits awaiting a new set of posts which I think I've now sourced...

...as you can see, I started to pick away at the lacquer-coated neck which pealed off with remarkable ease...

... but the face of the head is a badly crackled...

... the face of the neck fully stripped...

Some questions gentleman...
I intend to leave the neck bare, but will maple tolerate being used as a fretless...? (this is the only fretless instrument I've owned - I do remember playing a fretless maple-necked Jazz years back...)
The Nitromors stripper I used on the Thunderbird should strip the remainder of the body, but do I have to take specific care of the face of the head...?

Scott suggested leaving all the holes in place as a reminder of how complex an instrument became so simplified, but there is a bit of me that is thinking about plugging the lot and leaving her with just the original pup in the neck position and using Tony's old 20/20 as a "filler" for the other hole, but I may still go for the EMG inside the 20/20 - she'll still be minimalistic... early days...

There is a funny side to this, sort of...

I was driving home from work a couple of days back after sorting out a sensor on an automatic rolling barrier for a truck yard and was stuck in some early evening traffic...
As I slowly approached a bus-stop I could not help but notice a blue sweatshirt being worn by the sole person standing at the bus-stop...
On it was emplazoned "KENTUCKY WILDCATS"...
Well, my wife's home state is Kentucky, and when over there in 2003 I bought a shirt that had the University of Kentucky Wildcats' logo (UK WILDCATS - United Kingdom being another name for Great Britain, so for me it was a nice link)...
Anyway, I commented to the person at the stop that , "That shirt's a long way from home, you don't see many of those over here..." and the confused Slavic accent that came out of this guys mouth said, "I wait for bus..."

I honestly don't think he understood a word of what I said... I just no longer feel at "home" anymore...

I think the only part of the "English" that will be left is their language...
