Just a few tid bits for the upcoming year Epiphone will be releasing thier 60s Thunderbirds in three custom colors, not the usual suspects either!
Also Epi is resurrecting a mid 70s favorite that should grab ya. All I can say for now. Happy New Year!
Custom colors = always a good sign that things are going well for the model.
I wasn't aware of any 70s Epi favorite so I suspect it's an Epi version of a mid 70s Gibson.
Ripper?
I'll also assume no lefties. Uwe, if we don't die from power tool accidents, it's sadness from limitation.
I guess there's a clue in 'That might GRAB ya'.
I saw the Custom Colors. Can't wait!
/
They did Epi Rippers , but I don't think they ever did a Grabber run.
Sounds like Epiphone is taking a run at the market. Nice.

Epi Rippers were always essentially Grabbers because they all had a bolt-on neck. And the first generation ones even had only one (crappy) pup, albeit non-sliding. The Limited Edition 2nd generation had a P/J combo which sounded decent.
There was a nice walnut/rosewood Grabber that I was offered 40 years ago and now wish I hadn't passed on. Looked something like this

Damn!
That's hot.
I recently passed on a reissue Ripper for a really good price simply because I've been sticking with shortscales. May not have been the brightest decision.
They got themselves heard with their nasty growl. It's what Gene Simmons liked about them, who preferred them to the Rippers he had also received for free from Gibson.
Has anyone tried to rewire a G3 to get the solo'ed pickups? Did it sound good? Honestly I never liked in-between settings on either bass or guitar (the only exception being a Ric 4001, as in Smoke on the Water).

Well, if Gene Simmons liked them, you know I'll need to look into buying one.

Journalists had provoked him, he wasn't himself! That drawing was added in the aftermath, this being taken in California, you could of course see the fault line.
I don't know when the timeline is supposed to be. I'm ready for something new from Epiphone now, especially if it's something like a Grabber. Frankly, I'm tired of waiting.

I'm surprised they didn't bring back the Rivoli or a short scale set neck EB3.

I was half expecting an Epi DC Jr.
Now that would be a hit.
Great little bass for a reasonable price.
It would be a win.
My Jr remains one of my favourite things to pick up and play.
Just saw this on a Dutch bass forum:
Epiphone is set to re-issue the iconic Gibson Grabber model bass from the 1970s, which was discontinued in the 1980s. The Epiphone Grabber bass will be available in a natural finish, and black finish. Unlike the original sliding pickup, this re-issue will sport a non-movable, mounted pickup. All this goodness will be available for a price of $999.99
Ain't no Grabba if it ain't a-slidin'.

If they could come up with an Epi version with a gloss finish for under $500, it would be a best seller.

Yup, grabb'em by the pick-up, wasn't that a Presidential quote once?
Would have liked to seen the new Gene Ebo in Epi that isnt million bucks.. That reminds me. Anyone heard any news on this alleged new Gibson V Bass that never seemed to come to fruition?
If you're talking about the G2 branded Gene Simmons affiliated version of the V, I'm guessing it got shelved probably because the G2 bird didn't sell.
The Epi Grabber will probably do well even if the pickup doesn't slide. As long as it has the cool little truss rod cover that says "The Grabber" on it. A good option would be to put a cat emoji sticker on after the The. ;D
Both the original Epi Ripper (actually a non-sliding pup Grabber, the muted single pup sounded cheap and nondescript) and the much later Ripper Limited Reissue (with its P/J combo and a bolt-on neck more a Fender really, but not bad sounding at all) didn't sell well. Neither did the Gibson Grabber II, Ripper II and G-3 Tribute reissues by the Gibson mothership (all three of them substantially better than the 70ies Gibson originals). Compared to the SG- + TB-shapes, the pancake Ripper/Grabber/G-3 body shape is an acquired taste though I grew to like it over the years. The all-maple-induced weight won't make it a sure seller either.
I'd be surprised if the new one will have a shelf life of more than 18 months before deletion, but then model longevity is rare with modern day Epi basses, I can only think of the TBird and the JC Signature as rare exceptions.
Don't forget the Epi EB-0.
That one is a mainstay as well
Haven't they given up on that - I thought so?

The Allen Woody Rumblekat and the Viola Bass have been around for many years. at least 15 years in both cases. The Embassy Bass hasn't been around that long, but it's been more than 18 months and it's still being made.

I see it's no longer on the Epi website and it's out of stock at lot of retailers, but there are still new ones in stock.
I think they must have quit making the Epi EB-0. But they came out with the Epiphone SG bass E-1 which seems to be the same thing with a different name. Why they named it that, I have no idea. Several years ago, I found a deal using coupons in which I was able to buy a new Epi EB-0 for slightly over $200. New ones cost $289. I got it because it was so cheap. And since I had a Gibson EB-0, I thought I'd get an Epi one, too. I've barely played it because I have too many other basses which are better and I'd rather play them. The Epi EB-0/SG Bass E-1 is a beginner's bass. But getting one could lead to advancing upward toward getting better basses in the future. It can also be used as a beater bass. As has already been mentioned, they seem to be getting harder to find and they're no longer on Epiphone's site. So I don't know what's going on with them. On the other hand, the EB-3 isn't on the site, either.
They've given up on the EB-3 too - which should have been called EB-3L as it was a long scale model.
I'm not knocking Epi, I have a few. Their model policy is based on being an entry level/budget brand. They know their customers - if they stick to playing music - will eventually move to other brands, hopefully Gibson of course. Epi's model policy tries to create attention with first wave buyers as opposed to nurturing brand loyalty.
Most Epis were never badly made, it was the pups that often let them down. And with those early models emulating classic Gibson models with which they (re)started about a quarter of a century ago as Gibson's budget arm (their de facto 'Gripper' model among them) that was especially true.
The early Epi Ripper:

The later one:
Everything will boil down to the quality of the pup of that coming Grabber if you are not hung up on the sliding mechanism.

Was anything launched at NAMM? I've not seen any photos yet.
Gibson, Rickenbacker and Fender did not attend NAMM. MusicMan, Ibanez and Yamaha were the only big names there, and no big announcements either. Neve-designed pickups on the Yamaha Pacifica, new finish options for MM, the Ibanez Pat Metheney model now has a Charlie Christian pickup, that's pretty much it. And with the smaller and boutique manufacturers - more composite materials and multi-scale fanned fret 7-string guitars.

Forgot to mention the new Ashdown basses, long and short scale, they seem nice, $320
(https://ashdownmusic.com/cdn/shop/files/SAINTSOAP_GREEN_800x.jpg?v=1695989274)
That looks nice and simple.
Wasn't there a Gibson showcase event in LA last Thursday? I thought there was some new custom color Epiphone Thunderbirds being talked about. Inverness Green, Silver Mist and Ember Red perhaps?
That Ashdown looks sharp! Nothing unnecessary. Simplicity rules. Good enough for me.
The Ashdown looks a bit barren and featureless? Like a small face on a big head. Small pickup, small knobs and miles of empty land in between them.
I don't like Ashdown amps, so nothing would inspire me to try their basses.
The Dano fans are excited over a ruby red Longhorn , now with binding and an f hole.

It supposedly has high output pickups. That's not a characteristic of classic Danos.
They should probably say "slightly hotter"
I doubt it's going to be Stingray hot. These are still lipsticks , there's only so many wraps around a bar magnet that will fit inside those tubes.
Danos have a unique charm , the designer cut every conceivable corner he could to make them cheaper.
These , by design , were the best student priced instruments they could build (by New Jersey housewives with little to no woodworking experience)
I don't understand quite how it happened , but I fell for them. They weigh next to nothing , but they're tough as nails. They do sound good , and really are fun to play.
I love them.

You're probably right. Still, I wouldn't want to change the tone of the pickups by adding any more windings.
I had never heard a Dano clearly up close until I heard the late Billy Bacon play his. He had a late 90s reissue Longhorn with flats. I couldn't believe how good it sounded.

Uwe's edit: Do I detect double entendres here?
I love simple one P90 guitars.
Years and years ago I bought a reissue Longhorn. The Copperburst. I had many reasons to buy one. When I first saw one in a book, I fell in love, some of my favourite bassists used them (Rinus Gerritsen of Golden Earring, Frank Kraaijeveld of 'Dutch Stones' the Bintangs, Jack Bruce, Entwistle, the lot), but I really fell in love seeing Tom Petty play one in that Traveling Wilburys video.
I bought it new with all possible discounts from the Dutch distributor for 200 euros (I guess around 200 dollars) and I love it. I played many, many shows with it and I recorded with it. It looks very good and sixties, it's very easy to play, it's a real poser's bass (I'm 15% technique and 85% faking and posing through gigs) and it's easy to do all those poses haha! But main fact was our live engineer loved it. Our lead guitarist sounded quite muddy and the Dano cuts through. A side benefit was the attention of mainly older man (*) asking me after the gig about the bass: 'Is it an oldie' - 'I used to habve one' - 'I'm a big fan of Rinus...' etc.
(*) Nowadays fortunately enough young girls want to borrow it, because of Maneskin haha.
One bad thing: intonation: tune it, check the tuning at the twelfth fret, take the strings of, take the bridge of, move the piece of rosewood a bit, put the bridge back on, mount the strings, tune it, check the intonation at the twelfth fret, take the strings of, take the bridge of, move the piece of rosewood a bit, put the bridge back on aigain, mount the strings, tune it.... so the intonation of my Longhorn is always 'good enough'.
Just curious, did you tape your nipples playing it?
And to bring the subject to its logical and ultimate conclusion according to which all threads end in Deep Purple, Roger Glover played both a single- and a double-neck Hondo Longhorn in the early 80ies when still with Rainbow. He thought it recorded very well, but didn't use it live for lack of ultimate oomph.

I never gave them much thought until I had to repair my friend's DC59 (Jimmy Page style?) Danelectro. Yes they are cheap, but they are built using another era's version of cheap, frugal design principles. I found it fascinating to work on, and all the design quirks gave it a unique tone. Sort of dirty and unfocused with a rusty, wiry edge to the tone.
There's Roger with the Hondo Longhorn (good shot at 03:43), I had forgotten about this particular vid, he likely also used it to record the track as well as he was in love with the Hondo's recorded sound at the time:

Hey, it's a nice shade of red, I only have a Cherry Studio to keep it company - I need another Thunderbird!

No, it's definitely the tailpiece. I printed out one of the large Sweetwater images and measured. The bridge is parallel to the pickups, the tailpiece is slightly farther away on the G string side.
Not in this pic it ain't
What did I start?!

I wouldn't trust any geometries to be faithfully reproduced on an image that potentially came from a smartphone or similar small device.

It does look like the bridge is a tiny bit off in that pic, but the tailpiece is obviously farther off.

I printed the image from my desktop, aligned the print with the edge of a desk. ran a small t-square ruler across it.
To me it looks like the disallignments differ between pic 1 and pic 5, so I'd agree with both Rob, Dave and not to forget definitely Alan who probably solved the mystery.

If the geometries are distorted in the source image then no amount of analysis is going to get around that. Somebody is going to have to measure one of these basses in the flesh.
It would seem fitting that with the advent of Gibson prices for Epiphone instruments we start seeing Gibson factory errors in Epiphone instruments as well. Subtly erode quality and consistency while jacking the price. Fender MIM instruments seem to be in a similar low ebb just now.
I'm pretty it's just this one. all the other pics of the Inverness Green and Ember Red are mounted perfectly fine. Although the saddles seem to be maxed out to the front of the bridge.

Respectfully, no. There's at least one or two more that I really would like to have.
As you might know I've sent back my Gibson Nonrev in Inverness Green because of quality issues. I looked forward to see this one (as a press guy I saw the pics very early) but looking at the pictures more often I GAS for the silver one.....
There's one on it's way for a review!
