I'd like to borrow Dr. Bassman's new/old Mosrite.

But I'm sure I'd have to loan him my firstborn as security.

Hmmm.  I have this small perceptual challenge.  I spent 13 years at Texas A&M and was pretty well trained to reject the color BURNT orange...much too "t.u".

But I like Gretsch orange a lot!

I searched briefly for a pic of a green-headed monster, but decorum forbade.

VERY jealous here!!!!!  We need a report on how that Mosrite plays when it gets to you...

Actually, I'm more of a Mariners fan.  And that's a LONELY place to be this year, currently 27 games back in their division.  By far the worst record in MLB.  (Sigh....)

My daughters said I ought to leave the Chief sticker on the bass when I refin'd it because it added some "atmosphere", but nope - he's going on a LONG sabbatic.  The sticker would clash with the bass - unless I was a hard-core relic fan, in which case I'd bolt the thing together, drop in pickups and a jack, and play it.  Fortunately that's not me.

I really haven't come to any decision about color for the body. Whatever I do will be compatible with the headstock, as I definitely don't want to refin it and destroy the original Aria Diamond decal.

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: 'Fess up! How many Behringer Amp Users Here?
« on: August 01, 2008, 12:14:01 PM »
Dave may well be right - there are no specs more tweaked and manipulated in amps than power and THD.  As he notes, a peak power rating often indicated that the RMS power is considerably less - often about half. But whatever wattage that 4500 is putting out, it really DOES stomp.  For my use, it has an incredible amount of reserve power and overhead.  I have tried hooking up both my Peavey BX-115 and my new G-K 4x10 so the amp head saw 4 ohms and delivered its full power - it shook the house for just a few notes.  I think I'd have to play a venue the size of Red Rocks to actually need both cabs on that head.

I also own a Behringer BDI21 direct box (SansAmp copy), and I've been pleased with it.  I recently compared the Boss reverb unit and the Behringer copy, which is the DR100 reverb ($25 at Sam's Club online). I actually liked the Behringer better, and even if I had liked the Boss better, it would have been hard to justify another $125 in cost.

pinstripe also makes a GREAT imitation binding :]

Brilliant!

I also find myself thinking what an interesting touch the metallic or metalflake striping tape would be.

Bass Amps & Effects / 'Fess up! How many Behringer Amp Users Here?
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:30:25 AM »
OK, true confessions.  My gig amp is a Behringer BX4500H that I bought about 18 months ago.

So far, I absolutely cannot complain about this amp. It has worked flawlessly, it's quiet, and it has about twice as much power as I have ever needed playing in a surf band that's not in the bleeding-ear biz. I've read many threads in many forums, and the sense I get is that this particular amp (the 4500) is a good performer and many people are using it without problems.  The amp is a great value - I have about $150 into mine - and I'm hard-pressed to find any fault with it. It seems like most others have had the same experience; although the initial and short-term failure rate seems higher than most, which is probably accounted for by its budget origins.

I've been playing it through a Peavey BX-115 (single 15") cab with an Eminence speaker, and it has performed very well. I recently bought a G-K 4x10 cab to use with it, as I want better note definition while playing and I don't think the single 15 is going to deliver that definition.

I don't really fret about 'tone", I just look for a sound that pleases me.  But so many people agonize over the concept of tone (and often much too obsessively, I think) that I sometimes wonder if I'm missing something.  shoudl I be more discriminating? Should I be looking at other amps just because they're often claimed to sound better - and I'm just not noticing something that's missing?

And what about others who own Behringer amps?  I see that now they have the BVT 4500H (and 5500H) which include tube modeling. http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHBVT4500H .  They're moving along with their offerings.

Kindly discuss.....

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: What's your favorite bass overdrive / fuzz?
« on: July 31, 2008, 10:46:14 AM »
I started using a 1960's Univox SuperFuzz, which is one of the "holy grail" fuzz pedals that now brings silly money on Ebay.  Problem was that although I liked the sound solo, when I used it in a mix all the note definition disappeared. I simply could NOT tone it down enough so that i had any definition to the notes at all. The bass just turned into "woof, woof" in the background.  I never have come up with an adjustment that I like when playing in a mix.

Here 'tis:

And yes, I still have it. I'm just not using it at present.

I replaced it with a Boss ODB-3, and with the blend control on that pedal, it's working out pretty darn well.  The adjustments are touchy, but once I got it set up right, this pedal is working for me.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I may try some striping tape on my black Jay Turser JT-401.  Who says a '54 P clone can't have racing stripes??????????  The black would be a perfect base color.

Fender Basses / Re: maple board Precisions
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:12:50 AM »
I can't say that I know the difference.

I have a '63 P with a '72 neck that's rosewood.

About a year ago I got a Turser JTB-401 copy of a '54 P with the single coil pickup and maple board. It's the only thing I have with a maple board, but the pickup is too different from my other basses to make any judgments.

How does one compare a split-pickup P with a single coil P?  As far as I can tell, they both sound like basses, and I like the way they sound. I guess that works for me.

Fender Basses / Re: New Squier basses...

That classic vibe 50's P REALLY is tempting, but I'm a complete sucker for that shade of blue.  I have a Turser JTB-401 already, and it's really the same bass...but it's black.

Check it out....no real differences at first glance, other than the tugbar on the Squier....
