Agreed, that blue is lovely. The right shade of blue is a color which has led me to make some interesting and possibly ill-considered purchases.

On a skillet-hot 4th of July about 1995, I spotted an '85 Chevy short box pickup on a used car lot in Austin, TX.  It was one of those shades of blue.

Getting it out of town required a new battery, an alternator, and a few miles down the road, a fuel pump. Most things in life are more enjoyable than replacing the fuel pump on a hot Chevy 305 V8 while working in a couple of inches of dust by the side of a Texas road in 100 degree heat.

It wasn't until i drove it a few days that I learned it need a transmission rebuild. The rest was chump change that I did myself, but that one was done by a local shop. That pickup ended up being more expensive than I expected.

But it was blue, beautifully blue. And fortunately it ran great after the tranny was sorted out.

Uwe, you put words to something I've felt for a long time. It's very creepy indeed when people are forced or intimidated "group thinked" into performance. I've never trusted it, and that's one reason I tend to shrink from musical performance at churches or religious ceremonies. It's too close to a form of propaganda. But I do attend the Christmas concert at a church when a number of my friends play in the band, as it's sufficiently non-specific-dominational enough for me to enjoy it.

Yet another example of people who believe they are right so strongly that those who disagree can die. It's one of the worst aspects of religion since societies began. The scary thing about this is that I'll bet he would claim to be a Christian (capital C.)

It's an audience pleaser and a sweet, simple bass line. One of my favorites to play.

That's a good point, though, about the role country music (real country music) has played in the development of rock.  Bob Dylan had something to say in a speech somewhere.  I wrote it down I thought it was so important and here it is.

'The other half of rock 'n roll has got to be hillbilly.  And that's a derogatory term, but it ought not be.  That's a term that includes the Delmore Bros, Stanley Bros, Roscoe Holcomb, Gid Turner and the Skillet Lickers--groups like that.  Moonshine gone berserk.  Fast cars on dirt roads.  That's the kind of combination that makes up rock 'n roll, and it can't be cooked up in a science laboratory or studio."

The Dylan quote says it...where did Elvis, Bill Haley, Ritchie Valens and others who helped move rock & roll mainstream come from? Their backgrounds included gospel, folk music, "hillbilly" music, etc. Add a smidge of blues, mix well, out comes rock & roll, which begat rock.

I think Burton Cummings has one of the more distinctive voices in music.  As it happens, I once worked at a radio station in Idaho where his cousin Gary was the program director.

I think the news of his death landed with a thud. No outpourings of anything except re-caps of his murder trial and later criminal conviction for the Las Vegas inciudent.

Seriously, with its catchy, uplifting, yet minimalist hook it is very American in a good way. You guys excel at joyful music.

Thank a fella named J.P. Sousa. One of the most brilliant march composers in history. Practically every march he ever wrote is an earworm. Marches may be out of favor as popular music, but every 4th you will find large crowds savoring every note, and his marches play continually with fireworks displays.

Respect for the Frogman.  He was one of the old guard.

Great tune that Haggard makes really believable. Love that one.
