Now that I look again at the Aria photos at: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/aria/solid/mos/17xx.html I'm curious as to what color my bass started.  The Sunburst bass shown in the photo has a white PG, and the one on the bass I have coming appears to be kind of a goldish pearloid (see photos at start of thread).  If there were only three colors available, I'm thinking that would most likely have been on a black bass.

I've driven the area around Jackson (fun town - get your old west portrait taken on the square), the Tetons and Yellowstone a number of times. The thing that tends to surprise easterners is distances out here.  Yellowstone and its nearby attractions aren't near ANYthing.  In the west, we measure travel by miles, not hours...because miles roughly equal hours.  The issue isn't traffic, it's distance.

George, glad to see you!  Long time no chat.

I always enjoy your posts and your depth of knowledge about Fenders. Bill just steered me here, and it's a pleasure to run into you again.  I look forward to reading your contributions!

I think the Jag basses look great! The one thing I'd read about them was that they tend to have hum and RF problems until the owner adds shielding.

So I grabbed one at Geetar Center and tried it out...plugged it in, first thing I heard was hum.  I still like the looks, but I think the reports are probably right.  If you get one, plan to spend some time shielding the cavities and cleaning up the wiring.

I want one.  ;D

At $899 for an H22 the question becomes - do you want an H22 re-issue or an Epi Jack Casady??  I've seen the Casady at a local shop under $600.

The H22 seems overpriced to me.  I had expected it to run more around $500.

I REALLY like hollowbodies and the H22 look, but think I'd take the Jack version.   ;)

We have a two-screen drive-in here in Fort Collins  (northern Colorado, about 40 miles south of Cheyenne, WYO).  The cool thing about it is that although they still have the old speakers-on-a-post, they broadcast the sound track for each screen on a low power FM frequency so that you can listen with your car stereo.  In my case, I've backed a pickup into the parking spot, put a pair of 2x12's across the bed by the cab to form a seat and put camp chairs in the end of the bed toward the tailgate.  It makes 2-tiered seating. The kids can fort up against the cab on the 2x12 platform with blankies and pillows, and the grownups can sit in comfort in the camp chairs.  We bring a boom box with fresh batteries, sit it on the cab and tune it to the FM frequency.  My daughters went to The Dark Knight and another movie two nights ago...they're big enough to drive themselves now, so the 2x12's have been retired (note: if you do this, put a cleat under each end of the 2x12 so they can't slide off the sides of the pickup bed...)

About Yellowstone - you may recall they had huge forest fires in that region in 1988; those fires burned about one-third of the region that year. We only live a day's drive from there, and we have visited a couple of times since the fires.  A lot of the dead and downed trees near the road are due to the fire. However, since then, the pine bark beetles have become a problem throughout the entire west. I don't doubt that many of the old trees have been killed by them.  My view is that the pine bark beetle is part of a cyclic phenomenon and we'll eventually realize that we need to ride it out and let nature restore the forests over (a lot of) time.

It looks like what you have is an Aria Diamond 1720 bass . It appears to be an early one. In 1966 Mr. Arai introduced electrics made by him in existing factories he had bought. The earliest ones can be found under the Arai Diamond or Aria Diamond names, from the same time period. The 1720 was introduced in 1968. The Diamond line was around in the catalogs as late as 1974 but by 1970 they don't seem to have the Diamond name on the headstock. So my guess is 1968-69.

Wright mentions that the Strat copies of 1968 had solid maple bodies. He doesn't mention the body wood in the paragraph on the Mosrite guitar and bass copies, but if what you bought turns out to be close grained, it could very well be a maple species.

This is the same bass later imported by Merson under the Univox Hi-Flyer name.

Thanks Dave, this is really interesting, and I'm grateful for the model ID. Given the Matsumoku connection, it's not hard to believe that the line might have been converted from Aria to Univox. I did some surfing and with your ID, I found this page with pictures of the bass and the companion guitar: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/aria/solid/mos/17xx.html

This web page shows the production dates from 1968-71. Both bass and guitar were available in Sunburst, Black & White...and it appears that the original pickups would have been black-face with black trim rings.

I love knowing this kind of stuff.

those almost look like DeArmond Turbojet (sp?) pickups

http://www.curtisnovak.com/pickups/repairs/TurboJet-Bass/

Exactly right!  I've looked at those DeArmond PUs at the Angela website.  I learned more about them from the Novak site.  I wonder if there's a DeArmond/Mastumoku connection?  From watching numerous Ebay auctions and doing a bit of digging, I've observed that the same pickups were used in Lyle, Univox and Epiphone hollowbodies from that same 70's time period - which makes sense, as all built in the same factory.  I've clearly seen the same pickups in Univox, Lyle and Epi guitars and in basses from those lines.

You may have just saved me a LOT of trouble!

The vintage Lyle HB I've been putting off working on has one or two pretty deep scratches across the front lower bout area.  I've been dreading trying to polish down enough to eliminate them. I'm reasonably sure that this 70's Matsumoku product has a poly finish, and if so, then the CA glue you used in your scratch repair earlier in this thread might be my savior.

This pic doesn't show the scratches, just the bass (a 335-copy, of course...):

Dang - those Eastwood P90 bass pickups in that thread look like really good candidates!  The T-bird pickups are also rather intriguing - they'd give a chromey look to a Hi-Flyer that would be really unusual.

I even have a pair of early 70's Lyle bass pickups sitting on my bench, but I'm not sure whether they'll fit either....yet.  They might even sit too high for a solid-body, since they were made for a hollowbody.

These have been sitting on my bench for a couple of years - I'd need new trim rings but at least I have the originals (heavily painted) to serve as templates.  I have a single-pickup Lyle hollowbody sitting that's waiting for a pickup, but I have a Gretsch pickup I've been too lazy to install so far.

But I'll need to wait for the Aria to arrive so that I can measure the cavities.  I'm really not eager to enlarge them unless I have to.

Yesterday I won an Ebay auction for something I've been wanting for a long time - a Mosrite copy. Most copies are Univox, which I like, but this one is an "Aria Diamond", which is a totally new one on me.  it's a project that will need pickups and other pieces as well as a refin, but I'm excited at the prospect.

The headstock is natural finish, and I would rather not mess with it.  I'd like to leave the original decal intact.  The body wood looks pretty decent, so I may go with a natural finish.  Natural would look good with the pickguard material. Any opinions?  And does anyone know more about the Aria Diamond basses???

Photos follow.....

Hi everyone - over at this interesting forum called OffsetGuitars.com*, I've been trying to help the new owner of a vintage Mustang Bass regarding strings. I had one of the reissues, and because the bridge is string-through-body, LaBella medium scale strings worked really well. But would short scale strings work as well? If you have any experience with this, please respond here or at the original thread over there if you want. Thanks in advance!

*This forum appears to have been born out of frustration with the FDP.

Two comments:

(1) The info from Dave about winding length is really handy! I strongly suspect that medium length strings will be needed.  Even hollowbody short-scales often need 32' strings because of the difference in tailpieces.  If in doubt, I'd rather be a bit long than too short.

(2) Comment about FDP deleted - thanks for the nudge, Dave.
