Gibson Basses / Re: More Ebay madness
« on: August 19, 2008, 05:10:40 PM »
Is it worth it Dave? Done it in the past and had no discernable result from ebay.

FYI - I posted a MIJ EB-3 copy a few months back, and it was pulled in less than an hour. It has the lawsuit headstock, but otherwise is not going to fool anybody ('specially with a maple board!). Ebay told me to cease and desist from posting it again (or anything like it). I guess Big Brother's (read Gibson) legal dept. was on the lookout.

Why can't people photograph their instruments without including their feet in the picture - or, at the very least, put on some shoes? Gawd!

Well, that explains the abundance of seamen on "McHale's Navy"!

I got my first B.J. when I was 15 in '69 listening to this on tv with a sexy lil brunette named Michelle:

Wow~ Chicago, Bread, & the Runaways....that takes me back tooo
Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie....who was the Rhythm Section??
The chick on drums had some GUNS huh?? woh

What, no mention of the guy introducing the Badfinger clip?

The "classic" Runaways rhythm section was Jackie Fox (with Thunderbird in clip) and the late, great Sandy West.

Headstock is like an exaggerated version of the Gibby.
Pickups are proportioned / sized wrong. Bridge pickup looks to be positioned to far forward.
Pickguard is too large, and is shaped wrong.
Bridge cover looks like the neck pickup cover from a Jazz Bass.
No Varitone!
The body looks screwy, too, but I cant put my finger on the problem...
Uwe???

Sumpin's wrong here. The headstock, tuners, pickups, bridge cover and selector switch are all "Don Swayze" - meaning they sorta look like the real thing, but not quite... I smell a rat!

regardless of brand name i could never get into a P with a Jazz pup back there.you just don't need it.

Not trying to sway anybody, but I like having the J pickup. It's there if you find you need a little snap in the sound, and it gives you a nice thumbrest up where the strings are tight. I use it for ghost notes and quick little runs. Even if you have the pickup turned off, it helps in that regard.

Other Bass Brands / Re: What kind of bass is this?

Lotsa history in that band - Gary Wright on keys, Greg Ridley on bass (not in this vid, though he's playing on the track - might not be the Burns you're hearing) and the ever-dangerous Luther Grosvenor (later Ariel Bender) on guitar.

I heard Stagg's stuff is crap, but I'm strangely drawn to this thing

Not a 'Bird - the headstock has more of a "wave" to it. Whatever it is, it's huge!
There used to be an ad for subscriptions in GP, back in the 70s with a classical guitarist and a rock guy handing each other GPs as Christmas gifts. The salty rock dude was wearing a V-Bass with that headstock, but it had a brown finish and IIRC, the rubber grip strip on the lower wing. Couldn't see the pickups though...

The V Bass could just be the worst sounding bass of all time. I couldn't get rid of mine fast enough...

Gibson Basses / Re: Early Explorer
« on: August 08, 2008, 08:30:52 AM »
The 80's big hair bands ruined the Explorer.

At least Entwistle keeps it still cool with the Orange Exporter Bird & Alembic Spyder basses. The Edge took the guitar version back from the big haired metal bands as well.

Actually, the Gibson version was not so popular with the hair metal bands, due to the lack of a Floyd Rose and wacky paint schemes (although Gibson did do some like that). The shape was copied by all the poser guitar manufacturers and produced ad nauseam.

Alan Lancaster of the mighty Quo played a Mustang bass for ages - it's on all their classic seventies recordings. And you could always hear when he moved from the E string to the A string because they sounded so totally different.  He was an early role model for me.

What, no Travis Bean basses Uwe?
