Title: 2010 Movies
Post by: Rhythm N. Bliss on January 20, 2010, 05:39:07 PM
Got tix to see Alice In Wonderland at the Disney showcase theater-El Capitan- which opened in 1925 & was beautifully renovated in the '90s.
Gonna take a girlfriend to the March 5th Thurs. Midnight show & then take my daughter Tanya to the Sat. Midnight show opening weekend!!
She'll be visiting the Southland from Sacramento that weekend & hopefully we'll see some real stars on Hollywood Blvd. cuz the Academy Awards are that night too!!

Saw Crazy Heart yesterday which is considered a 2009 movie & it's pretty good.
I'm not wild about Country music but the songs in this flick aren't much different than Blues songs, really, they just have pedal steel & are sung with a twang. lol
Cool that Jeff Bridges got the Golden Globe award for Best Actor for his role in this as Bad Blake but I'm guessing Clooney will win the Oscar. We'll see!

How To Train Your Dragon looks like a fun animated flick which is also opening in March.
Clash of the Titans is another CGI fest opening in March....

Looking forward to Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness next week....

Saw a billboard already for a new TRON in 3D that's opening in Dec.!
Gonna be a good year for movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is also Iron Man 2 this spring and Kick-Ass at some point this year which has Nicholas Cage as one of the supporting characters. Cage also has The Sorcerer's Apprentice which looks pretty good and Season of the Witch so it is going to be a big year for him. Can't forget about Toy Story 3 this summer in IMAX 3D. A number of people around my age will be looking forward to Part 1 of the last Harry Potter movie. Tron Legacy does look good and I plan to see it even though I haven't seen the original and I don't know if I will. Going into visual effects has somewhat made it hard for me to watch visual effects heavy stuff from that far back.

It has been ages since I went to the El Capitan theater. I saw Hercules there when it came out as well as another movie that slips my mind a bit.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6CJenNMsb4

Gonna see it in 3D, of course!!!

I think How To Train Your Dragon opens tomorrow tooo
That's anuzza 3D extravaganza!!!

Still got 3 tickets for Underland at El Capitan & hope my twin daughters will make it down to see it with me this weekend!!!
I've already seen it twice but once more will be goood!!!
If the kids don't make it I reckon I'll off the 2 extra tix I paid 25 bucks each for!!

Lots of gooood movies this year....

Always a pleasure to see Herr Rourke.

I forgot that Clash of the Titans comes out this weekend. Maybe I will go see it next week if I am not working. I do want to see How to Train Your Dragon also so I will probably go see that one afternoon in IMAX. I have found that I am better off not waiting around for my friends to go see movies these days and Friday afternoons are perfect for just relaxing and enjoying a movie as I found out when I saw Alice in Wonderland in IMAX last friday.

Ain't Wonderland great, Darroll?
I'm gonna see it a third time....

Clash of the Titans doesn't open til next week. Alas
There was no Midnight show last night at the local theater complex.
So I'm gonna see How To Train Your Dragon this afternoon....

How To Train your Dragon is better than expected. The trailer is cute, but it's really good--the characters are GREAT & the wide variety of types of dragons is amazing & amusing!!

Clash of the Titans tonight! ...or tomorrow. :D

Coming Soon:

I probably go to about three movies a year.  Used to do more, but just too busy anymore.

I have some free time in the morning so I am thinking of getting up earlier than normal and catching the first IMAX showing of How To Train Your Dragon. At some point I plan to go see Clash of the Titans with one of my friends, just not sure if it will be in 3D or not because 3D has been getting bad criticism.

We tend to do the same...but last weekend went to Shutter Island.

At the end of that movie, I thought Hitchcock would be proud of it!  Well done!

This one has got some excellent pre release reviews.  It's about the Australian engineer unit who were faced with the task of tunneling under German lines in WWI to blow the trenches up from underneath.

Kick Ass really did kick ass although I think it started a bit slow.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is the movie you are referring to where the guy has to fight off his girlfriend's 7 evil exes. What caught my attention is that he is using a flaming sword to fight off some of them. From what I can tell, the story is similar to that of a video game where the lead character even "levels up."

The trailer for the Expendables makes it look like something that might be worth seeing when it comes out. Especially when you look at the line up they got for the film. Stallone, Statham, Steve Austin, Rourke, Jet Li, Willis and even a role by the governator himself although I think it would be just a small cameo type roll but I may be wrong. Seeing Terry Crews on the cast list reminds me of the Old Spice commercials he did recently and the fact that I saw him at the local Woodranch restaurant at the mall asking if they validate for valet parking. Found out my friend's ex is good friends with his daughter too.

I can't wait for Iron Man 2, planning to see it in IMAX I think. It depends on if my friends find the money even to see it before 1 pm one day when it is the cheapest.

Yeah~ Scott Pilgrim! That's the Ric bassplayer. Gonna be gooood

IRON MAN2 is May 7th not May 2nd as I said. I was misinformed.
Saw a billboard with the right date.
Can hardly wait! There's an IRON MAIDEN character as well as Scarlet Johansen & Gwyneth!!! YARRRRRRrrrrr

Iron Maiden is just a rumor that was centered around Olivia Munn. No idea if it is true or not but her original role was scrapped and they re-shot her as a different character.

I saw Beneath Hill 60 on Friday night.  Great story, excellent film, and plenty of dry Australian humor.  It's the story of the Australian tunneling unit in WWI who were assigned the job of tunneling under the German positions at Messines and blowing it up with 450 tons of explosives.  Not sure if it's been released in the US, it might need subtitles for the Australian accents LOL

So it was revealed last week that Olivia Munn plays a reporter in Iron Man 2. I feel like a small rug was just pulled out from under my foot with that one after all the speculation.

I am planning on going to see it tonight though. I actually already have my ticket secured as I was planning to see it in the morning when things are cheaper but my friend made the last minute choice to see it tonight.

I just got back from Iron Man 2 and I think it is a really good addition to what the original put on the table. The scenes with action had a lot of action and there was one twist that I was extremely glad that they left out of the trailer as I had no idea other than what the film foreshadowed. There were also times when I was cracking up along side my friends.

Got my ticket yesterday aft too & was mighty glad I did cuz it was SOLD OUT by 9pm, which is when they showed the first one at the theater for just 5 bucks!!!!!
IRON MAN 2 ROCKS!!
Lots of drama & ACTION & Scarlet Johansson not only looks gorgeous as ever but KICKS MAJOR ASS!!
Gwyneth is good again too as Pepper too!!

Mickey Rourke is KILLER as the Bad Guy & Sam Rockwell is ok but the 2 of 'em together still don't add up to Jeff Bridges as Obediah in the first one!!
JB is a great actor & really deserved that oscar he just got for Crazy Heart!

The only thing I didn't like was Highway To Hell being played at the end, which has nothing to do with the story.
Maybe they'll get it right with IRON MAIDEN songs next time to go with an IRON MAIDEN character.
Still give it TWO THUMBS UP--one for Scarlet & one for Gwyneth!! heh heh
Seriously~ It's a FIVE STAR flick!!!!! Well done

Robin Hood next week...

I finally got to see the Hurt Locker yesterday, has anybody seen it? I found it a remarkable movie, it plays in a war setting, but is neither a war nor an antiwar flic, it's essentially the character study of how men handle the greatest imaginable stress. Edith, who generally comment war films after ten minutes with a "I think I'll go to bed now." was captivated by it. I don't believe that the brass had any issues with this films, it showed how men have to function for an army to work properly. But it could just as well have been a documentary about a fire brigade.

Saw Iron Man, while it was good but not really great, in my opinion. The Battle scenes were really cool, the best part, in my opinion. Actually had some witty dialoge in spots. Not much in the way of plot or story though.

I enjoyed Kick ass more.

I just can't say the name Pepper Potts without laughing. Rourke was great as was Robert Downey Junior. I still don't know if I like Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury.

Did you stay till the end of the credits to see the reveal of Thor?

I thought Black Widow as an enemy / soviet spy?

Too much drama for a typical holywood action movie, it was nice at times, but Iron Man 1 was way better than that. Too bad cause Iron Man is my favourite Marvel character.

Re Alice in Wonderland: Much as I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, I thought that a disappointment. It was exactly what it professed to be: A Walt Disney kiddie flic with a bit of Tim Burton quirkiness and dark charm thrown in, stalled by a lamentably lame plot and a nauseating attempt at a politically correct ending ("Girls, do something with you life and the sky will be your limit!").

Somehow, I had expected a lot more. As disappointing as his Planet of the Apes remake.

I actually had to go back 3 pages to find this thread. Watched Expendables a couple weeks ago and I must say that it is definitly an action movie. Lots of explosions and there was one sequence that was just full of pure awesome. A little disappointed in some of the visual effects as they clearly did not blend but while others were seamless.

Because of The Expendables, I didn't get to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World until today. It is a movie that is clearly aimed at my generation with a lot of video game type references throughout it including an 8-bit sword. The Universal intro was even turned into an 8-bit version with the music getting the downgrade too. This was a movie in which I was impressed with the visuals as there were a lot of them and they all fit despite not being invisible effects. One thing about this movie is that it is a music heavy film. The main character is the bass player of a band as they move through a battle of the bands type system. One sequence includes a visual music battle between the band and one, well two, of the evil exes that Scott must defeat.

Saw Despicable Me in 3D for fathers day yesterday with my 6 yo and wife. Great family feel good flick. No great plot twists or anything, pretty predicatable but great characters. Best scene for me was when the Bad guy needed a loan do fund his next big job so he walks into the bank, into the toilet , presses the flush button on the urinal and the wall slides open to reveal a huge cavernous RED entrance foyer with the words "BANK of EVIL (formerly Lehman Bros)" etched across the top of the archway.  ;D

Caught it the other day and if there was ever a movie that deserved the "blow'em up" rating, this is it ;D.
It's a bit on the cornball side, with a boatload of cheezy dialogue , a totaly unrealistic everything and butt kicking, blow it to bits violence beyond comparison.
All that being said, I really enjoyed it ;D. That's what I went to see, and that's what I got.

That's EXACTLY what I want and expect from a good "blow 'em up."  Sounds perfect.

Last night I really needed to kill some time, so I watched that deathless epic Bubba Ho-Tep starring Bruce Campbell.  It's about a soul-sucking Egyptian mummy dressed in western boots and hat preying on the residents of a fourth-class retirement home, among whom are Elvis (Campbell) and Ozzie Davis.  Ozzie's convinced that he's John F. Kennedy, and there's another resident named Kemo Sabe who is sure he's the Lone Ranger and wanders around wearing the Ranger's mask and western hat.

Let's just say - Sound of Music or Patton, it wasn't.

But I gotta say that I get a kick out of Bruce Campbell.  The guy isn't afraid to take on any role, no matter how odd or dumb.  He likes to work.  I love his part on the TV series Burn Notice.

Now I wanna see The Expendables.

We went to see The Town last night, the Ben Affleck directed bank robber movie starring himself and Jon Hamm (the dude from Mad Men).  Started off good, but eventually descended into an unrealistic storyline.  Lots of guns and a car chase or two, so as an action flick it's reasonable.

Saw it a few years ago.  I agree, sad but at least he got to do it one more time!

If you're into the Dolls, check out 'All Dolled Up', shot in their heyday.  It's streaming on Netflix.

Screened in the UK some years back - truly something sad to behold... anyone ever had the Killer Kane Band ep...? I have it somewhere but it's in my loft - a bit of a black hole is that place - the vocalist went on to notoriety...

'All Dolled Up' was compiled by Bob Gruen from 30 hours of gigs, interviews and general Doll mayhem that he and his wife shot.  Definitely worth a look.

Finally seen Inception... what a movie... 8) 8) 8)

We have Avatar with an extra 10 minutes from this weekend over here...

I really wanna see Inception! It's only in the "bad" theatres here now, but I'm going to try to go tomorrow night.
What's this Avatar with an extra 10 minutes? Is that with the scenes with the other creatures?

Several bits and explanations of some stuff... all clicks in well... the DVD and Blueray is out next month here - Blueray is going to have a stack of stuff but the 5/1's are still too pricey over here so sticking with my Panasonic DVD 5/1

Inception is simply stunning... enjoy...

I just got back from the 20 minute preview of Tron: Legacy that aired in IMAX theaters around the globe like Avatar last year. A major difference now is that Avatar used 3D just to have 3D but Tron: Legacy gives it a purpose. You start out in 2D when in the real world but jump into the grid and you are now seeing things in 3D. It is a truly visually stunning film actually stunned my friend immediately compared to Avatar which didn't until a bit into the film. An exact quote from my friend: "TRON Legacy screening was AWESOME!!!! Makes AVATAR look like a finger painting"

MEGAMIND is a gas! Saw it in Extreme Digital 3D for $17 & the characters & plot & animation are really GREAT but the extremeness & 3D effects weren't that great.
Gonna see it again when it hits the $3 theater.
Saw MACHETE again in the $3 theater for laffs. It's ULTRAVIOLENCE but comedy....like Clockwork Orange.

Well I saw Harry Potter this week. It is the book series of my generation after all. In the end it kind of left me with no distinct feeling towards it. Didn't feel disappointed but not extremely impressed. I guess it is because it is only half of the book but it did set up for the second half pretty nicely. I must say that it did have some pretty good effects though.

I may go see Tangled in the next couple weeks. I have heard that it is a really good animated film.

I agree on both.  Good B movies - of the category I call "Blow-em'ups".  RED is the better of the two, but knowing that The Expendables was done for fun made it more enjoyable.  There were a lot of those dark, visually disjointed fight scenes where you really can't tell what's going on.

Maximus is great but it's the Pinocchio & Snow White style Olde World charm that makes it so magical.
They took it to a whole nother level with the artwork combined with cgi magnificence!!
The artists really went BEYOND on it!!!!

They should have titled it Rapunzel tho.  Classic indeed!

I saw the first showing at my local theater today at 11 AM. I was the only one in the theater to see it in 3D. It wasn't until 5 minutes left that some others came in to wait for the next showing since there is only one screening room that has it in 3D. Very enjoyable film and I couldn't help but marvel at the effects they used whether it be the hair simulation or the lighting.

I saw it too just two days ago. I was entertained, but I felt it was overdone and for a 2 hour 20 minutes movie it recounted its story in almost feverish haste without really adding much substance. And the end was kind of obvious. I guess it wanted to be a new Matrix 1, not sure it achieved that though I'm sure we'll see those zero gravity effects to death in the next generation of films.  Film was a mix of Matrix 1, What Dreams May Come (that 1998 Robin Williams flic where he searches for his suicidal wife in heaven and hell), The Sixth Sense, Emmerich's The 13th Floor etc. And while it tried its darn hardest, not once did it manage to depict the paranoia of the inner self so brilliantly as in Shutter Island. Nolan is no Scorcese.

That said, I felt entertained and the visuals are great. And Leonardo de Caprio is to the disturbed mind what Tom Hanks is to everyman, the perfect foil (with the danger of becoming type-cast in that role).

Agreed.  He's turned into a really good actor, but his roles have been pretty narrow since Titanic.  At least Catch Me If You Can had a little bit of fun in it.

I agree about Tom Hanks being the everyman.  He has considerable range.  The classic actor I most often compare him to is Jimmy Stewart....another everyman who could play anything from Harvey to Westerns.

I think the greatest "chameleon" acting today is Anthony Hopkins.  The guy can do ANYTHING.  When one actor can go from Hannibal Lector to Don Diego de la Vega and sell both roles, he has incredible range.

This weekend we're gonna catch the Harry Potter movie...but tonight, I have a gig at 9!  Fun!

I saw SALT on DVD yesterday. With all due respect to Brad's better half (who can actually act and look good as she showed in that Clint Eastwood directed movie about the mother losing her son and nobody believing her), WHAT A PIECE OF SHITE IT WAS. The most dumb-ass, hair-raising clichéed "Russian KGB sleepers among us"-plot imaginable (no, not even imaginable, it was way worse). You wouldn't believe that anybody would still dare to make such a film and let it play in the present to boot (the James Bond starter rip-off scene of her being tortured by - of course - North Korean henchmen should have warned me immediately). Nothing wrong with spy and action movies (I really liked the Bourne identity trilogy), but when a petite, fragile (bordering on the anorectic) woman such as Ms Jolie knocks over a dozen hunks from various SWAT teams and shoots another dozen of KGB hitmen with the same training as her in the cavernous belly of a rusty vessel within 90 seconds my sense of reality rebels, after all this is not Avatar or Prince of Persia (which I though was good old-fashioned fun). I'm fine with her jumping out of subway trains, police cars, helicopters and off trucks (she does all four in the movie) without a bruise, that's movies.

Ter, no album of Led Zep or off-night bad live performance ever approached the depths of SALT. I have no idea why Ms Pitt felt compelled to act in it, it was plain bad, in contrast The Hunt for Red October was a cineastic masterpiece, evil Russians and all.

I saw Amelia recently. It's avanity project of Ms Swank who must have read a book on the pilotress and declared her her rolemodel. The film could be a TV movie from the sixties for its lack of pacing and the naivite of its story-telling, but it's not a wasted evening at home like SALT was.

If you do like conspiracy flics with a realistic touch then look at Matt Damon's most recent one where he very credibly plays an idealistic US Army officer in Iraq (disappointed from not finding any WoMD) siding with the CIA to uncover the manipulation of intelligence by the Foreign Office. It's afilm in the Bourne Identity trilogy vein, looking mostly like it was filmed by an embedded journalist in real action, monochrome, fuzzy pics and shaky handheld camera at all, but it keeps you at the edge of the seat (and commemorates American values like "we're doing this for a purpose" and freedom of information).

I admit to being intrigued by the remake of True Grit.  I was a big Duke fan, and my first reaction was negative.  Then I realized it has been nearly 40 years since the movie was made!  I decided that if they can't take another run at most movies once every 40 years, I don't know why.

Just Jeff Bridges' gravelly voice and presence in the previews went a long way towards convincing me. And I can't claim that casting Glen Campbell in the original was a stroke of genius...he was adequate at best. However, it will be hard to top Robert Duvall as Ned Pepper...he's one of the great actors of our time.

I caught Tron Legacy this morning in IMAX. That movie had the theater shaking at times. A majority of the visual effects looked great with the exception being Clu. The CGI was probably a bit too extensive which made it too obvious. In the end, it just didn't blend that well in a realistic manner.

Just got back from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  Nice film, but I have to say it was rather slow.  There was a lot of time spent on wide shots of landscapes and the key characters sitting around a tent, and not as much time invested in moving the story forward as I expected.  I could easily cut that film by 15-20 minutes and improve it.

Also, I need to pull out book #7 and review it, but I don't remember the "Deathly Hallows" as being a wand, cloak and stone that could restore life.  Perhaps it has been too long since I read it.  I'm wondering how many liberties they took with the final story - which IMO would be a considerable mistake.

I fell asleep during it. I thought it was one of the most boring movies I have seen. 3 hours of them being chased, with not much in-between. Saw Tron which was not bad, not great. Too much story & not enough action.

That reminds me, the CGI in Avatar is rather interesting in terms of the characters. I went back and watched the CGI closely which is when I noticed that things are a bit backwards from what one might think. The characters looked great, no doubt about that, but the CGI looked it's best when the characters were not clean so when they had mud on them or the paint. Those times were when the CGI looked good enough to be real while the other times it still had a CGIish look to me.

My brief inflight movie reviews from my Xmas flights cross country to visit the in-laws:

1. Tomorrow When The War Began

Australian made action movie about some teenagers who return from a camping trip to discover their town has been invaded by (generic, unspecified) Asian army and all townsfolk herded into POW camp.  Decent, low brow entertainment, good action and some teen hotness.  Storyline is interesting conceptually in my part of the world.  3 stars

2. Buried

Much better than I expected.  The entire movie is shot inside a coffin, with the sole actor we see being the guy in the coffin (US contractor in Iraq taken hostage).  He has a Blackberry and a Zippo lighter in the coffin with him, so the movie is all about his conversations with family, employer, State dept, FBI and his kidnapper.  Left field concept that works very well, suspenseful, and we share the hostage's frustration.  Surprise ending not what most people would expect.  4 stars

3. The Expendables

Stallone, Dolph Lungren, Jet Li, plus cameos from Arnie, Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke.  Old fashioned shoot em up, plenty of explosions.  Suffers from weak plot (but who cares!), and overzealous use of superfast cut editing.  Hot Latino chick doesn't get her gear off, which was a major disappointment for me.  2.5 stars

So... it's all done now...

What was your film of the year, and your biggest disappointment...?

For me, Avatar (with inception running a very close 2nd) and although I liked it, my big disappointment was probably Tron...

Saw Inception the other day. Enjoyed it, liked the concept, acting was good (well, none of it stood out as particularly bad). Plot was a little obvious but this was understandable due to the restrictions of the concept. Ending was blatantly obvious as soon as you found out what was going on with the main characters wife (about 2/3rds of the way through the movie) which was a bit dissapointing.
