Oh, and one of my favorite things about them is that they are "Scorpions" - not "The Scorpions"

Ha ha! That was a big deal with the older dudes that introduced me to them. To this day, I never put "the" in front of "Scorpions".  ;D

Billingsgate Records - Yeah! Chicago was a good town for those guys early on.

I was turned on to Scorps JUST before they started to break big with Lovedrive. Tokyo Tapes is a great 70s live album. I really like the Ulrich Roth phase of the band. They quickly became very "Scorpions brand" generic after they hit it big. Blackout was the last one I was particularly interested in.

Oh man, my favorite color for these. OK, I know they only came in two...  :)

Come to think of it, they build their 8 string necks in what they call the "fat back" design. A 4 string, P profile neck with paddle headstock should be just right.

Nice stack Bert!

My S/8 has never had any setup issues whatsoever. I do know of at least one person on the forum who had major issues with theirs though. I'd want to see it set up properly before buying.

Oh, cool, I didn't know that was the old red bird! Nice to keep stuff "in the family".

Uwe, how do we say "pointy Thunderbird" in German? Man, this is one comfy instrument to play! Really resonates like crazy too. Total infinite sustaining harmonics through an overdrive with no squeal.

Cool project. Good plan to shave the neck. I had a Warmoth 8 for a while and didn't like it very much. It was beautiful, but too chunky, even for my spider fingers. And the steel rods they inlay under the fingerboard make them heavy. Headstock reduction - looks good!

the body is a Jeff Ament custom, meaning it's larger and thinner than a standard T-4

I thought it looked odd. That explains it.

Baz, I was just thinking about that green beast you brought by my office that one time. Where did that one go???

That looks like the old "Ruby" color rather than "Red." An 8-string in great condition should fetch $1800-$2400 I should think. But if it is at a pawn shop, you may be able to negotiate some.

That sounds about right to me on the price. I paid $2225 for my gorgeous FireGlo 4003S/8 about 4 years ago.

Gotta disagree on the color though. Looks way more red than ruby on my monitor.

Usually nothing, it was one of JB's quirks - an allover scratchplate to prevent buckle-rash, causes a lot of static crackling from rubbing against the player unless it's earthed.
Never understood it myself, if it doesn't show the finish what's the point of it being there?

Yeah, exactly. It's like - "Let's put a bunch of screw holes in it and cover it up completely so the finish doesn't get f'd up."  :-\

Thats one thing I like about Fbirds is the maple snap/ brightness it gives the sound. Thats why I sold my NR and kept my F bird.

Wow John, I didn't know you sold your non-rev! I'm afraid Mr. Pointy here is officially going to replace the F bird for me.

I realized today that the finish reminds me of Rickenbacker's AutumnGlo - the matte version of walnut. I've always loved that. Like a piece of furniture.

More "performance notes" - this thing was nowhere near set up/intonated. LOL! I've got it in much better shape now. Minor stuff for someone who's used to doing their own setups, but could be really off-putting to the average kid/novice. C'mon Gibson! Follow through...

Could beat it when they came out.

I don't like listening to 5.1 mixes of music, I'm a stereo guy. 5.1 sounds weird and hollow. I don't want Jim Morrison singing behind my back either and Robbie Krieger playing to my right in front or vice versa.

I haven't listened to a lot of 5.1 music, but I do have Rush Snakes and Arrows in that format. Can't say I'm crazy about it. Different tom-toms all over the place and such. I'm a stereo guy too. If I'm watching any kind of music programming/DVD in my living room, I'm always set to left/right/sub only. It just sounds better. I suppose it could be cool for certain types of music - Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, KMFDM.... I still have my turntable, stereo tube amp, and a pair of Advents in my basement.  ;D

And iTunes killed the CD cover and booklet. For that alone they deserve to fry in hell. Music without a cover and a booklet is like having sex with yourself. Plus they aided and abetted the commercial success of a crap sound quality. Double-fry in hell then.

Agreed! I don't do iTunes. I like a hard copy/liner notes. I've bought a total of one song, and that was by a friend of mine's, and the only outlet to help support him. I DO download singles from Amazon for cover tunes.

Oh man, those are awesome! Danke! Definitely Glover for me tone-wise, and he's playing even more killer licks than I knew of prior to hearing this isolated track. Glenn's tone to me is kind of "bad" overdriven tube amp. I think it could have been refined a little bit. Reminds me of my former V-4B when it was pushed too hard, but not hard enough. And what I mean by that is - you could get a really great grind with lower volume settings, or you could get a sweet roar by turning it all the way to 11, but there are in-between tones that just sound awkward.
