Other Bass Brands / Carvin LB20
« on: May 25, 2024, 06:02:51 PM »
Got this back from my friend's place to possibly put back into rotation.  My old Carvin LB20.  I bought it over 20 years ago from my friend Greta Brinkman, who used it on tour with Moby.  She never loved it, so she lent it to me and I really bonded with it, so I bought it from her.  It was my #1 until Gibson released the first left-handed Thunderbird in 2013.  It still has my favorite neck.  Not sure I'd opened the control cavity before, but very nicely shielded.  Not sure if that was special for Greta or they all came like this.  Very quiet for single coils.  I've been thinking of swapping out the stock J99 pickups for something beefier, but these do sound pretty good, and I got an interesting tone from them by scooping the mids, which I hate with the Thunderbird's humbuckers.  Maybe I'll keep it as-is.

Cool, thanks.  I was able to watch the reel.  But not sure if any of it was Momoa playing.

That's sad to see.

And now, apparently fake Sam Ash sales sites are popping up.

https://www.samash.com/fraudulent-websites

I'm sure one of them is selling the Brooklyn Bridge.

That's cool!  I first thought that wasn't real facial hair on that guy, but now I'm not sure.

Scott, you could always just make one with no holes and use double-sided tape.  I did that with my NR and it looks really clean.

Carlo, what's that PAF DiMarzio like?  I have a Carvin LB20 that I really love because of its neck.  It's been living at my friend's place for when we play together.  It's got their J99 single coils in it and I'm thinking of putting in beefier pickups and taking it out more.  Looking at options.

Oh!  Haha.  From the movie Stripes.  John Larroquette's character is watching through a telescope women showering.  He says, "God I wish I was a loofah."  I can't find a video to link to.

I am abhorred and repulsed.

Uh huh.  Sure, we believe you.

Wow.  I had to look that up.  Found a Reddit thread about it.  Some great comments.

"Which loofa is code for stay the hell away from me"

"I'm waiting to read the headline that Bengay was mistakenly used instead of KY Jelly."

When I saw Victoria spanking her Danelectro with her flat hand, I believe it was the first time where I had visions of wanting to be a bass. I’m still coming to terms with it.

God I wish I was a loofah.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I try not to judge someone about things they said and did in their '20s, especially when they later acknowledge them, like is mentioned in this Guardian article.

"... he founded his next band Rapeman in 1987. Named after a Japanese manga, it was perhaps the most high-profile example of Albini’s eagerness to prod and provoke, and he later expressed regret for the band name, calling it “flippant”."

"Possessed of a gleefully scabrous sense of humour, Albini riled up plenty of artists and fans alike with insults and provocations – such as jokingly dedicating a Big Black single to the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. He became contrite in later years, saying in a viral thread on Twitter in 2021: “A lot of things I said and did from an ignorant position of comfort and privilege are clearly awful and I regret them.”"
