Gibson Basses / Fun with TB+

I now have here a set of '91, 2001, and 2013 TB+.  As soon as I get my RNR back from getting some neck work done, I'll try them out and see how different they sound.

Super interesting that the '91s have no magnet bump on the bottom.  Anyone know how these are constructed?

Is the chunky rectangular part at the bottom of the TB+ a magnet? If so, what part does that play compared to the coils?  I ask partly because the vintage pickups don't have that.

It became quite clear I'd be waiting an indefinite amount of time for more lefty basses to appear from Gibson, so I finally decided to take them up on their original offer and take a guitar and relearn it.  I haven't touched one in ages and never got very far with it.  This wasn't expected to come until March or April and suddenly arrived yesterday.  Pretty excited.  I think it's beautiful.

Other Bass Brands / Replacement tuner recommendation needed

I have a 1976 BC Rich Bodine bass that came with elephant ear tuners that are really heavy.  The only lightweight replacements I could find were Schaller M4S.  They're on the bass, but they're terrible quality.  Anyone know of any other lightweight replacements for these?  They have the pins on them.  No screw holes.  I would rather stick with crappy tuners rather than do any modifications to a very rare bass.

Gibson Basses / EMG TBHZ - not keeping them

I got a set of the TBHZ (passive) to try out, hoping I'd get close to the tone I was getting in those 2001 TB+, but without the noise.  Nope.  They sound almost identical to the TB+ in my 2013.

When I pick up my BC Rich at the luthier from getting a new nut I'll ask if maybe shielding would help the noise from the 2001s.  My guess is no.

Since I've heard so many good things about Thunderbirds from 2001, I bought a set of 2001 TB+ from someone who was replacing his with Lollars.  I had them put in the lemon 2018 so I could directly compare with my #1 2013.  The 2001 TB+ really sound a lot better to me than the 2013s.  A lot more clarity.  Only problem is that there a constant low hum, where the 2013 (and stock 2018) are dead quiet.  I don't think this is a grounding issue; it seems inherent to the pickups.  Anyone else here have a 2001 or similar and find this as well?  I'd love to find a way to quiet this down so I can put them into my 2013.  But I think for live use and recording, the hum would really annoy me.

Gibson Basses / Are 2001 Gibson Thunderbird pickups different?

People with 2001 Thunderbirds say that they just sound better than other years.  Anyone know if the TB+ that year were somehow different?  I ask partly because I'm buying them from someone who is swapping them out for other pickups.  Since I'm left-handed, I'm limited to 2013 or 2018.  If the TB+ from 2001 are somehow different, it would be fun to put them into one of my two 2013s.  If they're not, and there's some other reason for the difference in tone, then oh well; I have a spare set of TB+.
