Ian Gillan is appearing today - in about an hours time - and an attempt to play Smoke On The Water live with circa 4,000 musicians... totally nuts...

It is often forgotten what a communitarian force my favorite band is. A Ritchie Blackmore riff brings us all together.

Hi to all at LBO.

Bit of an update on Kenny's post.

I went to the Guitars on the Beach and had a terrific weekend.

It was a beautiful day, plenty to see and lots of friendly people.

If you want to read all about it, with pics - go here:

Ian blasted out Smoke on the water, with everyone playing along - just brilliant!

When he had done, he sat down outside a beachfront cafe, having a bite to
each, no more than 8ft from the passing throng, on the pavement (sidewalk for you guys on
the other side of the pond) behind the stage.
Just one of the guys!!
Love it!

A really great day.

Cheers. :)
Now a little more wiser. . . . .

As we all know, I'm not quite neutral on this, but I found your message heart-warming!

Nice article my flat budd...
I remember seeing him around the first tour (iirc) post Steve Byrd and Pete Barnacle and three members of the band (Torme/McCoy/Underwood), were in a bar just down the road from St Albans city hall, where they were scheduled to play that night, I was with a bunch of playing buddies... I made a comment something like IG's bound to walk in next to which the drummer (a pro player) with us replied, "Nah, you'd never get a prima-donna like him in here", and right on cue, in he walked with Towns...
My best memory of that night was having a conversation with Randy California, who was support...

As for Lyme Regis, Jackie and I honeymooned there 25 years back...

One step back...

Saw this line up twice (posted some pics of the first time years back) but on the second occasion and for the last song of this collection, Steve Byrd was upstaged by the appearance of a certain other guitarist - if looks could kill... I believe this is pretty much the only fime of this line up and the version of Smoke is pretty good...

SOTW is nicely punkish and feverish in that rendition - Gillan (the band) were always a little punkish, which gave them appeal at home in the late seventies and early eighties, but not so much in DP's former chief markets: US and Germany (Gillan did well in Japan though, but then anyone with even the faintest Purple connection does well there). McCoy's bass playing sure taketh no prisoners, I love that man! His bass playing is stoic, brutish, yet intelligent (he came from a Jazz Rock/World Music Fusion background).

And he never forgave Ian Gillan for splitting up Gillan (the band), he was real bitter when he wrote this here  ...

Only a fool takes a big dog's bone away from it and not expect it to bite...

Mind you, can you blame IG for doing it... Gillan had pretty well run its course by then, imho...

Geez....If there were 4,000 guitarists on that beach playing Smoke On the Water, then all the Guitar Centers MIST have been completely empty of guys in there trying out guitars and amps. :)

Hey......I have a funny Ian Gillan story....

I was in a strip club one night in the mid-90s and a smoking hot RUSSIAN dancer I knew was talking to me. She was actually trying to talk me into dating her and part of her attempt to compliment me was saying "you look like Dylan."  I said "WHAT?....I look like DYLAN?...BOB DYLAN?"

And in her broken English, she says, "No Dylan...IAN Dylan from Deep Purple and Whitesnake."
Turned out she confused Gillan with Dylan....and Gillan with Coverdale, since both were in Deep Purple.

But the initial "compliment" of looking like Bob "Dylan" was definitely hilarious.
