GC catalog has a LE of 50 4001S Special basses in matte Mapleglo. Price is $3,400.

It's essentially a 4001v63 with a satin finish over a really nice flamed maple body, and a wrong (rounded) heel shape.

Saw one on facebook. Pickguard looks so wrong. I have no idea what they're going for here. Why a matte finish?

Is this bass supposed to be connected to Paul McCartney somehow?

Hmmm..wonder what the neck profile is like? Is the headstock that reversed right handed turned upside al la lefty?

Dave W

If it's essentially a v63 reissue then it won't have the reverse headstock (thank goodness).

Hmmm. A special run of 50 basses about 50 years since the Beatles landed in America.

No, there is no more a connection to McCartney than any other 4001xx63/64 bass. ;D

Sheer coincidence, I'm sure.

I've read that this was a special order from Guitar Center, and the marketing idea was theirs. Just passing that along from one of the facebook Ric fan pages, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed fact.

John Schoen

John Hall said on Rickresource that these basses were made for Guitar Center's 50th anniversary.

Well, I felt foolish thinking there was some direct link, but according to GC I was right!

"This right-handed tribute to the famous left-handed 4001S played on several mid-'60s classics..."

(I'm having trouble posting the image directly via flickr, it used to work but something changed recently)

The bass in the ad has a correct shape pickguard, and a wider pickup surround. The one in RIC's photo doesn't.

I recorded "Rockshow" by Paul McCartney & Wings, a live concert from a concert in 1976. Every now and then I put it on and listen to a couple of songs. Right now I've got "Silly Love Songs" going and Paul's Ric with the re-shaped upper horn sounds great! I'm not a huge fan of the song but it's got a cool bassline and the Ric fits - kinda tubby with a little bit of fur. Flats?

Watching it makes me appreciate this limited edition a bit more. I like the walnut wings on this one.

Cool - now they're playing Band on the Run!
