Title: Limited Edition of 50 "4001S Special" (v63 reissue?) in matte MG
Post by: ilan on June 03, 2014, 02:26:48 PM
GC catalog has a LE of 50 4001S Special basses in matte Mapleglo. Price is $3,400.

It's essentially a 4001v63 with a satin finish over a really nice flamed maple body, and a wrong (rounded) heel shape.

I'll bet they sell out quickly, even at that price.

Saw one on facebook. Pickguard looks so wrong. I have no idea what they're going for here. Why a matte finish?

Is this bass supposed to be connected to Paul McCartney somehow?

Hmmm..wonder what the neck profile is like? Is the headstock that reversed right handed turned upside al la lefty?

If it's essentially a v63 reissue then it won't have the reverse headstock (thank goodness).

Hmmm. A special run of 50 basses about 50 years since the Beatles landed in America.

No, there is no more a connection to McCartney than any other 4001xx63/64 bass. ;D

Sheer coincidence, I'm sure.

I've read that this was a special order from Guitar Center, and the marketing idea was theirs. Just passing that along from one of the facebook Ric fan pages, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed fact.

John Hall said on Rickresource that these basses were made for Guitar Center's 50th anniversary.

Well, I felt foolish thinking there was some direct link, but according to GC I was right!

"This right-handed tribute to the famous left-handed 4001S played on several mid-'60s classics..."

(I'm having trouble posting the image directly via flickr, it used to work but something changed recently)

The bass in the ad has a correct shape pickguard, and a wider pickup surround. The one in RIC's photo doesn't.

I recorded "Rockshow" by Paul McCartney & Wings, a live concert from a concert in 1976. Every now and then I put it on and listen to a couple of songs. Right now I've got "Silly Love Songs" going and Paul's Ric with the re-shaped upper horn sounds great! I'm not a huge fan of the song but it's got a cool bassline and the Ric fits - kinda tubby with a little bit of fur. Flats?

Watching it makes me appreciate this limited edition a bit more. I like the walnut wings on this one.

Cool - now they're playing Band on the Run!

Looks like they just grabbed a pic of a V63 there.

One owner of a new 4001S Special, Ed Dupont, was  apparently disappointed (http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=411455&view=unread&sid=e4d0a05d5b134ca2605cab18f1106024#p825940).

Geesh....from that "Bass Medley" above, ya certainly wouldn't accuse Paul of writing memorable bass hooks. Considering how memorable most of The Beatles catalog is, that is a little surprising when you hear the bass solo.

I'll say! Poor setup is one thing, poor QC is another.

Maybe the Chinese v63 knock off is set up fine.

I saw one in the flesh.  It does look a bit off with the not so shiny finish.  It's too bad it's over $3 grand, which is probably defendable for the construction and labor to make in Ca.  It is probably a nice base for spraying a decent finish over.  Flame looks nice.  I hope it's not fotoflame.

Thought I would post this pic here too - first time I saw this special edition 4001S in person, at GC no less, with 2 beautiful cousins!

I'm pretty sure they are a GC exclusive.

Hmm starting to wonder whether they only produced 50......or they are not moving too fast.  Not sure how many GC's there are in the US, but am sure there must be at least 35. I run up and down California a lot and the 5 different GC's I've been to (including the one Harry was at) all have them in stock. The one here in San Francisco has sold 2 or more them since June and currrently has one 1 in stock.

When I looked at the pictures on the GC site many of them had misaligned neck pickups and  skewed and off-center bridges. People who have seen them in the flesh have confirmed those issues. You would expect a better finished bass at that price point, that could explain why they are not moving fast.
