RIP Lou Reed

Rolling Stone reports the passing of Lou Reed.  Like them or not, and I didn't particularly, you can't miss hearing the influence of The Velvet Underground on new music.

I always liked Lou Reed, not a big fan of his personality, but certainly his talk singing. He knew how to sound himself with great musicians, Fernando Sanders was one of my favorite Lou Reed bands. I really liked Berlin as well.

I once was lucky enough to get to watch a Lou Reed show from his guitar tech's station, there was an amazing transformation as he took the stage, backstage he came across as an old man, quite doddery in fact, but as he walked onstage he seemed to lose about 20 years suddenly he was vital and electric, it obviously took it out of him though as when he finished the show he seemed drained and even more feeble.

You really are a cruel bastard.  LOL.  You have to give credit to Lou for having what many consider to be one of the finest albums in rock (Rock and Roll Animal) and then one of the worst (Metal Music Machine).  When I saw Alice Cooper, he had the recently liberated Lou Reed band, with Davey Johnstone on guitar.

It was the minty-fresh version I saw with the WTMN show - they filmed my night and I can see my white denim (yes, sad but true) jacket, ten rows back, in some of the crowd shots...

A buddy of mine was a true Reed die-hard and made me listen to the whole LP just after he got it, and the run-off on side four with the infinity loop...   thankfully, beer and comestibles were included to ease the pain...

from what i have heard metal machine music was a contract fulfillment record. quite by accident it became a template for all the coming noise/harsh electronic bands to follow.
