Thanks, Bill!

Here's the three hour total time refin I did yesterday to a metallic silver Squier body for a long time customer.  Scuff sanded with 320/400, shot with arctic white ACRYLIC lacquer, 3 coats in 15 minutes.  Waited 30 minutes and shot with 3 coats of clear.  It was completely dry by this AM. No buffing or polishing necessary.  It will go out Monday.  That's the advantage of using modern automotive products.  Proper prep and good gun technique and it's done.

I'm pretty sure it was done the same way in the Indonesian Squier factory. The silver was high gloss but very thin over polyester primer. No buffing makes for a less labor intensive finish.

So, I  could use the clear acrylic lacquer over my stained bodies and have less sanding/buffing?  Does it also fill grain better?

You could probably use it over stained bodies but it has very little filling properties.  On solid color finishes it works very well over polyester primer surfacer which is auto industry stuff, basically spray on bondo.

On stained or natural wood I use 2 coats of industrial (lacquer) sanding sealer sanded between coats and 3 coats of acrylic or nitro lacquer.

You might consider doing your experimenting on scrap wood instead of competed bodies, it might save a lot of time in the long run.

Sanding technique has a huge effect on the final result of any finish job IMO.

Could you give me brand names on the sealer and acrylic?

Thanks, Rob!

Bill, I use Mohawk heavy bodied sanding sealer, M610-1657 and Mohawk Piano Lacquer clear, M610-1307.  The sealer gets thinned 50/50 and the piano lacquer is ready to shoot.  I also use their Ultra Penetrating Stain and a lot of other products.  I'm pretty sure Scott knows the Rochester Mohawk distributor.

For solid colors I'm switching to acrylic automotive lacquers and compatible products from TCP Global.

Thanks Carlo, I've been to the Mohawk dealer after our last finishing chat.  Do I still need to grain fill with the Mohawk sealer?

I have never used grain filler. YMMV.
