That kind of wear took years of hard playing to achieve. What's the point of starting out with a bass that worn? If someone plays it as hard as Billy did won't it look like garbage in another twenty years? Probably a stupid question since the guy probably just hangs it on the wall to admire.

How many players hate seeing a vintage bass whose value has been ruined by mods, except when it's someone well-known? Then it's okay? And a fanboy building a tribute with fake wear is okay? To each his own, but it's nothing I admire.

I remember when that was first posted last year or so.  The OP asked if anyone could tell the difference, and you can find it pretty quickly with a good eye.  The tribute has nearly perfectly aligned scallops on the neck, and all the screws are nice and shiny.  It's a labor of love, at best.  If it sounds good, more power to him.  Even the Fender Custom Shop built a Tractor bass, and also a Rory Gallagher tribute Strat.

Sure, buying a relic isn't as bad as, say, buying a Warwick. 

But seriously... building a tribute to a modified guitar or bass isn't the same thing as putting fake wear on it. As long as some people are buying or making "relics" and proudly showing them off, there will be critics.

I fully understand Carlo's work in recreating Peter Cook's more mainstream works as a business but not distressing an instrument as a homage... my fretless Jazz is in the style of Jaco's but is black and that's as close as it gets...

Having played many and been entirely underwhelmed by the Yamaha Attitude Signature Bass, the production model based on "The Wife," I can understand the attraction of wanting to build a better sounding version. Locally, there's one in a music store that's even autographed and has never been sold since it was new in 1993.
