Phil Kubicki RIP

Sad news....Phil Kubicki passed away recently.

I've owned Kubikcis since 1985...own a lot of Kubicki-made instruments. I was always amazed that Phil took the time to personally return phone calls and emails. RIP.

Days before he passed, I actually had a guy fly in FROM INDIA to New York City to trade me for a Corvette Yellow '85 Kubicki that he HAD to have (swapped me prototype Kubicki SN#044 for it, made for one of the Jackson 5 guitar techs.)

RIP Phil.

I played my Factor for most of the eighties and I once sent the electronics in to have them repaired (as well as those fidgety ratchet wheels that always wear out replaced...  ). He indeed did take the time to repair and replace everything himself, sentt me spare parts (and lengthy emails plus a handwritten note) and only charged about 100 Dollars for it (including shipping) which could have never made up for his time and effort much less earn him any money.

Headless or not, rest in peace.

Sad news. He should be remembered for more than his basses. He started at Fender years earlier working under Roger Rossmeisl.

Yeah, you usually just see Phil Kubicki credited with the famous George Harrison Tele from "Let It Be" but he built a number of the 60s Fender prototypes and WAS the Fender Custom Shop back then.

Besides the Harrison Tele, he also built David Gilmore's Strat, a Strat that was made for Hendrix...post-Fender he made a wildwood Tele that was Arlen Roth's main axe for decades...plus all those ExFactors, like Stu Hamm's etc.

I actually own that famous Stu Hamm black one with the Oakland Raiders logo I got from Stu, plus Neil Stubehaus's blueburst he used on lots of albums and live sessions. Funny aside....Stu's old stinky/torn up sweat rag he left in the Kubicki case was an old Motley Crue t-shirt

When I saw a Kubicki for the first time in an advert mid-eighties, I knew I had to get one. That and John Taylor's haircut.
