Unknown actually played bass (out of character) on tour with Billy Bob Thornton's Boxmasters a few years back. Unfortunately no Gibsons in the pics I saw. I've also seen video clips of him playing a Rick back when he was still unknown outside North Carolina. He played an Brit singer/bassist named Veg McArtful.  ;D

He's touring again (in character) and will be here in June with the Rev. Horton Heat.

The band I produced, the Melungeons, or one of their alter-ego bands, have opened for Unknown Hinson here in Knoxville and some regional gigs since he was, well... unknown.  Growing up, I used to know so many people who legitimately spoke like his character's inflection (which is VERY much a Western North Carolina/ Northeast Tennessee dialect), but they're all dead now. Sadly, I'm now probably as close as it gets without parody. That Billie Joe Shaver wrote and performed the Squidbillies theme is another cool bonus.

Unknown Hinson has a signature guitar and distortion pedal with Reverend. I think Gibson bought a blanket endorsement with Adult Swim on Cartoon Network for Metalocalypse and got Squidbillies by accident. It was also funny that both types of basses featured, Thunderbird Studio V's and Les Paul Standards, were either completely out of or in extremely limited production for the entire runs of both shows.

I've seen videos of him with the Reverend. Sounds great in his hands.

Probably some of the sickest lines ever laid down on an Epi Les Paul bass. Solo starts at around 5:45.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Is that Reggie McBride, he of Rare Earth and Tommy Bolin Band fame?

No, haven't you heard? Martina McBride had a major identity crisis a few years back and this is what we're left with. Country music's loss is the Jazz world's gain I suppose.

Seriously, this is Reggie then? Doesn't look like him at all.

I loved his playing on this track:

Ah, I figured you were kidding. Reggie is cool but the guy playing the Epi LP is Christian McBride. He's more known as an upright player but doubles on electric too. You may recognize him from the Sting concert in Italy from a few years back. He has quite an extensive Jazz resume as well.

I thought it was Bake McBride of the Phillies!

I actually have a CD of Christian McBride, but him playing an electric didn't ring with me at all. Now that you say it - duh! Finally, it all makes sense, I already thought Reggie McBride had found the secrets to eternal youth! Christian plays like an upright player would, certainly not as attack happy as Reggie did.
