I've heard worse. And no one ever does this with Stairway to Heaven which just goes to show how good DP are and how lousy that hippie band I forgot the name of.

A jazz guitarist in Cincinnati named Kenny Poole would play "smoke" as a bossa nova latin thing...it worked really well.

I went through elementary school with two of Red Foley's nieces.  They lived two blocks away from me on the same street.This was back in the day when Red Foley had his own TV show  .

My band's guitarist has talked meinto playing Smoke on the Water because people love it.  While I agree audiences love to recall their pot filled memories, I tried to resist.  But, in the end, we're playing numerous tunes I've asked for, so I've given into his request.  I figure if people don't get up and dance and have a good time, I'll only have to play it live once.

We are really nothing more than a dance party band, so hopefully all works out well as his club (yes, our guitar player owns his own club and it's the only place we'll be playing) has a nice bar and folks should be loaded for anything!

For that matter, inside 18 months I saw Mr Gillan perform it at the Marquee with three different bands (once with RB on guitar), also with DPII and with Sabbath...!!! and Coverdale with DPIV

But curiously enough I don't think I've ever seen it covered by anyone else...

Red Foley's is decidedly jingoistic... Try taking the lyrics and putting them to Mr Glover's melody line...
