This weekend we had one of our two really big music festivals in Holland: Pinkpop. Lowlands is the other one.

I only watched it on tv. Mostly Precisions, some Jazzes, one or two Ricks and I've seen three Gibsons.

Alanis Morissettes bass player did the whole gig on a beatiful black Les Paul Bass. I saw the headstock of another one as back up bass.

The bass player of QOTSA did some songs on a Grabber (or Ripper?), but he mostly played a single pick up P.

I believe it was KT Tunstall's bassist who had a JCS.

It struck me how indistinctive most bass guitars sounded.
And that almost none of bassplayers had a really adventurous style.
Except for Joe Sumner of Fiction Plane. He really stood out; excellent bassplayer, great singer.





And apparently you need black suits, black and white instruments these days...

Fiction Plane.

The guy's the son of Sting, he sings like Sting, he looks like Sting, he plays bass like Sting and the songs sound like.. ..erm.. The Police and Sting.

I don't get it.

About the bass sound. I love festivals for this enormous stomach kickin' bass sound, but I hate festivals for the lack of definition in bass. At festivals I see people playing bass lines and I only hear one big wall of low bass.
But this year I didn't see any interesting players either.

Yeah, but why starting some kind of Police-tribute band as a son. Do something completely else...
And his father takes him on tour as support act; the only reasong why the band's afmous. They aren't that good... I don't take that seriously...

I totally disagree. They were by far the best band I saw on the telly yesterday while watching Pinkpop with all those quasi interesting bands such as the horrible "Editors", "Kaiser Chiefs", "Wombats", etc.

Why should he shy away from his roots/family tree?
The music is excellent.
Yes, it does resemble the Police a lot. But since when is that a shame?
They remind me of how exciting the Police were in their heyday. (Before Sting got all consumed by the rainforest  ethics etc)

It's good to have a difference in musical taste!

It always surprises me that a lot of British singers can't live up to the expectations. All the Dutch singers I saw were better live than the English guys. Felix of Moke, Tjeerd of Voicst and Bart of Racoon.

I have this friend and she's a real pretty young blonde, but also a bit naive in a nice way:) She has a good job at Holland's only real; alternative radiostation and she was at Pinkpop professionally.

Yesterday she met this Joe-guy from the UK backstage and they drank some beer together and had some real nice talk. They agreed to have some dinner today in Amsterdam.
When he walked away her friend asked: 'Did you know who that was???'
'Yeah, just some nice bloke called Joe!'

She and Joe Sumner have dinner today:)

She's quite fat nowadays... But it was a nice LP.

I meant sit through her performance. I wouldn't be concerned about Alanis' weight unless she were planning to sit on me, and that's a scary thought.
