I think the idiot was trying to spin the bass around his body on its strap and catch it but his strap let go. The guitar player in the band used to do it all the time without that happening, (with a Gibson Challenger no less!) but he had straplocks.

My son had straplocks too, but it's a question of physics, do that often enough and even they loosen up and retreat from their screw orefice. With 17 you're allowed to be reckless I guess.
