If he didn't go along, Gibson could always look for some other bassist from a long-disbanded band who once used a Gibson model that was a failure in the marketplace.

The whole story is actually the perfect explanation for the fact that Gibson didn't develop or produce their own pickups for the RD Sig.
With a total production of less than 500 it would be too costly to even make new pickup casings etc etc.

But they could have chosen something less generic and less 7ender looking...

They could have thrown in a set of Thunderbuckers and at least kept it in the family.  Of course it wouldn't be a sig then.  Perhaps a 'RD Variant'.

My dear whining brethren: I like what they did. Gonna get me one. And in 200years from now no one will even know what the difference to the original was. And Nirvana will still have no clue about harmonic relationships.

 Uwe,

If John's sensibilities don't allow him to make the purchase, just direct me as you would any good Fraulein  ;)

BTW I like it too, tho an original Artist is really where my heart lies.
Resident T Bird playing Drag Queen www.thenastyhabits.com  "Impülsivê", the new lush fragrance as worn by the unbelievable Fräulein Rômmélle! Traces of black patent leather, Panzer grease, mahogany and model train oil mingle and combust to one sheer sensation ...

I would be surprised if they didn't still have the old tooling for the covers.

They don't seem to have any problem recreating pickups and other details for short runs of old guitar models. But that's different, they care at least a little bit about their guitar customers.

I take it Henry fancies himself a guitar player. Just from a business standpoint it's rank stupidity to just ignore potentially 40%+ of your customers. I wonder how Epi's bass sales stack up against their guitars?

What Henry fancies and what is are two different things. BBC Breakfast viewers are still reeling from his demonstration of the Firebird x (though at 7am probably not too many people watched it).

Henry is a bassist by origin.

And didn't Dave once say that rule of thumb guitar to bass sales have a ratio 10 to 1. Certainly even higher with a dedicated guitar brand such as Gibson.

Did I? If so, it would have been something I read by someone in the industry. It wouldn't surprise me.
