They look different than your average TB+, black plastic cover but with a metal plate?
Maybe they are not cast in epoxy like TB+ and made like 60s pups, just with a plastic cover instead of a metal one. Well I think it's a plastic cover, it looks way too thick to be made of metal.

Even if they did belong to Woody, does that justify a BIN of $999? Furthermore, there is no documentation that the signature is actually his.

Not worth it to me but they might be to someone if they were Woody's with a provenance.

There's also a 'make an offer' possibility, which IMO is the main purpose of the auction.

There was another TBird pickup with the metal backplate up for auction last week. Much cheaper tho.

If I had some favourite pickups, I wouldn't take them out, sign them and then sell them. I'd leave them in my favourite thunderbird. Maybe that's just me...

Yep. If they were so good, why did he remove them?

These were Allen's favorite Gibson pickups and were by him in several of his Thunderbird basses.

Maybe these were so good that he moved them from bass to bass trying to find one that they worked in, until he finally realized they were too good for any of his basses.  ;)

Allen's interview with Vintage Guitar mag, 2001

Lots of gear talk, and he mentions a heather poly Thunderbird modified with nickel Thunderbird pickups that Paul Chandler found for him. Aside from that, nothing about any specific Thunderbird pickups.

As many basses as Allen Woody had in his collection, this seems like something minor.
