We have been playing out quite a bit recently. Between the band and the wife I have been the proverbial "one legged man at a butt kickin' contest".

Our show Saturday night was much better than the one last Friday even though our warm up group canceled 3 hours before the show. (That should tell you just how crappy the previous show was) Couldn't be helped and they are good guys, we will play with them again.

Anyway, I drug out the Les Paul bass for the first time in a long time and it sounded great through my SVT and two 15's.

Someone bought us all shots of Frangelico after I announced over the microphone I wanted a shot of "that Mrs. Butterworth".   ;D

I had a pretty full week-end.  Band 1 gigged on Friday night.  I drove to an FDP jam on Saturday afternoon, and then did a gig with Band 2 on Saturday night.  Yesterday, I chilled at home with the wife and the new kitten.  We watched the Hope/Crosby Road movie marathon on TCM.

We're trying to form a new band.  Our surf band is tough to book because we can't keep a drummer who is capable of playing more than an hour.  The old one has such bad feet that an hour is his limit...a shame, because he's been playing surf since the 60's.

It's been an odd year for us, we knew our drummer of 3 years was going to be leaving due to family issues ( quite frankly the whole was happy she was going too!) after mid May. We had a replacement in mind and so since then it's been a steady diet of rehearsals this summer. Our new guy's name is Wayne and from the bass playing point of view it's really a pleasure to work with him, he's very studious and really works hard to make his parts work esp. the bass drum. As a consequence we sound SO MUCH better than we ever did. We hit it again this coming weekend yay!
We will then take a short break for vacations - Our guitarist gets three weeks in Italy, I'm working on my house and heading to the Washington coast.  ;D
October and November look great with Halloween already booked.

Summer months are always light in NYC area unless you play at the shore areas and most are not rock places....pretty much vacation month for all my groups.  mostly my fault as i am heading out of the country tonight actually and then next 2 weekend heading out to drop kids off at colleges in oppsite directions of course....

I used to play in a surf band called the Aquasonics. Our drummer was a mad dog, in fact, everyone called him Mad Dog.

Mark, what gives... when does the new drummer earn a skirt?

Well actually no skirt for Wayne! He doesn't dress but it hardly matters as he's pretty much hidden by his drums he's so small. The thing is he plays really well and likely is what the band really needs to take a step up and play out more at better places around here ( i.e. casinos). He and and I can make a pocket that just feels so GOOD! My bandmates really never got how poorly we sounded and how hard I had to work to keep us together with our old drummer, Wayne plays with some authority and I find my playing is so much more relaxed and natural with him whereas before I had to "pull" the band thru a song now we just flow............. Bass player's dream, Wayne gets free pass on the skirt  :)

I hear ya, you are only as good as your drummer.

Ours has his moments but he still has a hard time with the notion that he needs to keep time  ;), he doesn't wear the flight suit either.

Perfectly stated....  A great drummer is a dream come true....  And great as in a pocket that is so big it just pulls you in......  not great as in just chops....

No gig for me last weekend, but we've got one this weekend and the one after with the Stones tribute.  Then I'm in the studio for 3 days recording an album with the blues guy I play with.
Cheers

We played Cool River on July 31st and Hanover's this past Saturday.  We have another on the 21st and then on September 4th and 10th.  Seems to be picking up a bit.

Double-bill with the Rockabilly band last friday night at a nice 200-seater called Greenfield's ....... less than stellar performance however, quite frustrating really.

Got a CD release coming up this weekend for Country songstress Sarah McClurg's debut release "Tennessee Rain" - should be a hoot, pretty much sold out already. Cracker-jack band to boot .....
