Rob Been from BRMC & his Epi EB2
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:40:36 PM »
Since I was introduced to their second album Take them on, on your own back in the early noughties, I have been a fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Singer bassist Rob Been is a riffmeister with a very rhythmical style. The fact that he plays his Epi EB2 with flats and a thumb pick through an SVT with 2 Ampeg fridges and knows how to get a beautiful balanced natural sounding distortion from his setup is just a bonus to the overall sound of this band.
They played at one of the smaller medium sized venues (about 600 ppl) here in Adelaide last night and my day after impression is one of feeling like I hadn't seen a great straight genuine rock and roll show like that in quite a while.

I took a wad of pics and will post them tomorrow if anyone is interested.

I read in an interview that he prefers his Rivoli to the EB-2 because it has - for whatever reason - a thinner neck and "feels more like a guitar".

They now have this Scandinavian drummer chick from The Ravonettes, right?

I love the band! Great bass sound!

My (bad) way of playing makes my strings pop onto the pick ups, once in a while. It gave some ticking sounds. With my Ricky 4005 I always put some black tape on the pick ups, which reduces that noise. Maybe he has the same?

Leah Shapiro from the Ravonettes has replaced Nick Jago on Drums since 2008. She is such a perfect replacement IMHO. She has the same loose almost lazy primal groove. From what I heard the other night I think she is probably slightly more technically proficient than Jago. The guitar rack next to Robs amp did have a Rivoli in it but he didn't use it at all.  The piece of Gaffa that is over the pup of his EB2 was not there the other night but there is more now around the jack hole. He really throws the thing around and it takes a good deal of bumps and knocks. At one stage I felt sorry for his stage hand who tried to rescue it from the floor after it had been purposely dropped onto the pedals. Feeding back and cycling with a big dirty whirlwind type sound, you could see his aprehension in picking it up and stopping the cacophony too soon. It was funny, childish and kinda cool all at the same time.

The way that once glossy cherry is now flat/matte/faded is nice!

Yep, I've always loved those guys. His bass reminds me of my EB-2 Custom, which has a nice skinny neck.
