Roger Glover's three 4001's

I didn't know he had another similarly (hideously, that is) modded 4001 with two slanted Jazz pickups and also a fretless! Also lurking behind him is the Thunderbird hat is somehow modded too. I recall seeing that bass on some Rainbow promo video.

Nazareth's Pete Agnew had the red 4001 in one pic or at least I think it was the same bass (had the Dawk mods) and Glover being Naz' producer at that time it's also very likely.

Cool. I think the toaster from the black one ended up in the bridge position of the T-Bird.

So Roger's T-Bird is a '63-'65 II with an added (Ric?) pickup. Or 'was', I recall reading that the headstock snapped during one gig.

Harry, I met and chatted with Greg for quite a while when he was here in Adelaide recently with John Mayall. He is a great guy and totally passionate about his basses. It was the first gig for his MTD - Michael Tobias Design and he was most exuberant about it. He kept turning our conversation around and asking me questions about my basses and setup.  Very nice guy.

neck pickup also looks wider than a ric.

I remember seeing purple at the felt forum in support of machine head and i noticed the jazz pickups on the bass.  didn't realize about the bridge.   Funny i was there with a buddy  who was thinking about trading his EB3 for a ric until he saw this and my proding....I was a die hard pbass man at the time and he decided to keep the gibbie because of this.  Also helped me refrain from getting a ric for a few more years until i joined a prog cover band.  Then i was fortunate enough to get a burst toaster  pup from we buy guitars in NYC.  Then i was unfortunate enough to trade it for 72 tele bass (which i desroyed with bad mod and no router...)  and a SD Curlee.
Sitting in traffic somewhere between CT and NYC

From a distance it looks too large to be a Rick or the Duncan which is a drop-in replacement.

Too bad - all that work to restore, and then installing some mutant pickups? The current Ric pups sound really great with a strong output. Those Duncan replacements are completely devoid of personality. I think they exist for the sole purpose of serving those who just HAVE to modify their bass.  And don't get me wrong, I modify almost everything at least a little bit.  :P

Exactly. The only thing they offer is being "not Ric".

Ugh, for some reason I felt like I had to change the pickups in my 4001 a few months after I got it - found the duncans on eBay, put them in, and knew immediately that I had made a horrible mistake! They were out within the hour, the original pickups restored. Mine's a '76, the original pickups are very low output, but nothing a preamp can't fix and they sound heavenly!

Those Duncan replacements are completely devoid of personality.

Alan Davey, formerly of Hawkwind and now with Gunslinger still has a great sound with a Duncan in neck position. Must be the remaining Rick and his bassman '70's then.
