Pissed as a parrot
« on: May 30, 2010, 05:39:34 PM »
OK Darwin is famous for being a hard drinking town but the term pissed as a parrot has taken on a whole new meaning there.

Man...a hangover that lasts MONTHS?

Those birds need to go on the wagon.

Beautiful birds. Whatever it is, at least some of them recover.

Seriously, that sounds more like a disease than a hangover.  I hope they find out what's going on.

Rainbow Lorikeets Dave.  Very common in Australia and in some parts rated as a pest.  Pretty little buggers though and funny to watch.

This is a disease and it doesn't look good, but some animals do get high and like it. Horses like beer, probably for the malt content and malt ferments in nature too. Likewise, fruit bats are on a constant high due to the fermented overripe fruits they eat as pretty much their only diet. Tortoises love fermented fruit and chimps and other primates go for them too.

Dogs don't. Out German Shepherds wouldn't touch anything prepared with wine no matter how much meat content there was and how long it had been cooked. They'd sniff at it in distaste and turn round to leave it.

I was thinking something they ate - but if the effects last months I guess it's not a hangover.  Could it be some type of fungus growing on something their eating?  If memeory serves me correctly there is something that can grow on wheat that's an LSD like substance that can really screw with your head.  Lorikeet acid trip? ;)

Dogs are fond of beer...

My dad's regiment adopted a kid goat whilst they were waiting to go into Burma in '43; they used to feed it tea-leaves (which it loved), but apparently it turned out to be fond of rum so it was drunk a lot of it's time there... it went missing and was apparently thought a stray and the King's Own ate it...

Naw, we also have Belgian, Scottish and Hungarian "Schäferhunde" plus probably a dozen more I can't think of right now.

We even have two types of German Shepherds,

the Altdeutsche Schäferhund with the long fur:

And the regular Deutsche Schäferhund:

And we have ze Deutsche Dogge, which you guys have misnamed "Great Dane":

Still no love for Schnauzers, then?  ???

Reminds me of an old joke...
