Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren has died aged 64

Malcolm McLaren has died in New York, aged 64.

The former Sex Pistols manager and impresario had been suffering from cancer and died this morning after complications arising from his illness.

His spokesman Les Molloy said: 'He had been suffering from cancer for some time, but recently had been full of health, which then rapidly deteroriated.

'He died in New York this morning. We are expecting his body to be brought back to London and buried in Highgate Cemetery.'

McLaren was born in London in 1946 and raised in Stoke Newington.

He attended art schools St Martin's College Of Art and Goldsmiths College before moving into the music industry.

He is most famous for acting as manager for rock band The Sex Pistols, as well as opening London clothing store Let It Rock with Vivienne Westwood.

McLaren and Westwood had a son together, Joseph Corre, the co-founder of world-famous lingerie store Agent Provocateur.

McLaren achieved notoriety when the Sex Pistols released their single God Save The Queen during the Queen's silver jubilee in 1977.

After arranging for the band to perform the track outside the Houses of Parliament, the boat they were on was raided and McLaren was arrested by police.

McLaren also enjoyed a solo music career, releasing singles such as Waltz Darling and Something's Jumpin' in Your Shirt.

He was also due to appear on ITV reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2007 but pulled out the day before he was due to fly to the Australian outback, declaring that he didn't know who any of his fellow celebrities were.

He was replaced by The Apprentice star Katie Hopkins.

He later made his reality show debut in Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack in January 2008, when he encouraged the housemates to remove their clothes, daub themselves in paint and produce an artwork using only their bodies and a bicycle.

McLaren's death was confirmed by his long-term partner Young Kim, who told the New York Times he had died of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs.

RIP. Updated story says he died in Switzerland.

Sad day. Say what you will about him, his influence on a generation of bands was enormous.

Wonder what Lydon will have to say.

I was just reading about him yesterday in my new Classic Rock magazine.  Sylvain Sylvain mentioned him when The Dolls were breaking up.  Said Malcolm offered him a plane ticket to England to be in a new band he was putting together and convinced him to trade him a Rhoades Piano and his White Les Paul Custom for the ticket.  Sylvain said he's still waiting for the ticket and that Malcolm gave the guitar to Steve Jones.

Down here, the most common cause of that disease is exposure to asbestos dust.

Yep, most Australians have heard of this disease I would reckon.

Well enough known in the US too. I'm not aware of any known cause other than asbestos exposure, not that there couldn't be other factors.

Another piece of musical history consigned to the pages of history... hat doffed...

Same thing took Mr Zevon... nobody knows how...

If anything was going to take him (WZ), anyone that knew his history would have thought "liver" from the booze or "lungs" from the smokes, but that...? Just goes to show how dangerous the stuff is...

I didn't know that about Warren Zevon, I thought he died of lung cancer.

Anyway, here's an article about Malcolm McLaren some of you might find interesting, the website is political but the article really isn't, it's about the man: Capitalism For Punks. I think the author has this right: "McLaren was mainly looking to make a buck, get famous, and have fun."
