i have been a member of ebay for 11 years with about 1200 transactions with 100% positive feedback. the other day i find myself signed out despite the correct ID and password. well, in order to sign in again ebay wants my social security number as well as the standard credit card number. anyone know what's going on here. thanks in advance.

When I get odd sign in requests, I will use a fake name and password a couple of times. It usually lets me know pretty quick if it's fake.

Scam.

Never ever do anything on Ebay except through their own site while logged in properly.  Never respond to any emails which purport to be from them.  When they need you to interact, they wait for you to login and set a pop-up message for you after that login.

I'd check with Ebay and see if my account had been compromised.

A security column I read regularly mentioned a couple of years ago that there were over 3000 known fake eBay sites and just as many fake Paypal sites. Those numbers are probably higher today. Somehow you're being directed to a fake site.

It sounds like your account was hijacked.

A few weeks ago on a Friday, I got an email from paypal notifying me of a transaction for a $150 purchase I didn't make. I immediatly went to paypal and tried to log into my account and was asked for the full credit card number. I thought WTF, drove to my office to try on that computer, same thing. My account had been hijacked, but after entering the correct card number I was able to change my password and log in. After logged in paypal notified me of a suspicious transaction and my account was frozen. I disputed the transaction and by Monday my account was un-frozen and usable.

I think what happened was that I bought something from a web site, on checkout paypal was offered as an option an I used it there. That site must have stolen my login information.

You got to be careful.

Yep, I had a bogus Netflix charge pop up on my PayPal account last week.  I called them and after chatting with the rep, I had my account canceled and immediately opened a new one.  You gotta watch those cyber crooks!
