Never heard of this before, whatever it is?

It's basically a vented wooden box with steel strings in the interior run across the front wall (the contact surface). Essentially, the strings provide a snare effect to the bassy thump you get playing it. Used widely in Flamenco and other styles of Latin music although I've seen them used in various World Beat type styles. Trickier than it looks but fun to play.

There are other solutions for that, most of them involving the use of weapons.
