The only current band of which I know of where the guitarist is using an Egmond is Pulp. And they are Brittish

I think Ed Friedland still uses his Egmond sometimes. It's still on his gear page with a sound sample.

But what do you guys think of the song the Nits Played and the sound they got from this Epi bass?

That was pretty cool.  I don't know the song offhand, but I could see the latter day King Crimson doing something like that.

As far as the bass goes, those really are pretty bad basses.  At one of the local jam nights, the house band has one.  They sound pretty awful through a low end amp (and I'm calling Hartke low-end).  I'm guessing you need a really good amp to get anything decent from those.  There seems to be a trend towards getting that dead thump sound, but I think it can be done better than by getting a crappy bass with no sustain.
