boffin, that's a new one on me. Had to look up zimmer frame a few weeks ago too.

Good old colloquial English...  ;D

Most Americans will have no idea what B*LL*CKS means, either, but there is reputedly an expat Brit driving around California with that as a car reg number... that and W*NK*R...  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o

Some don't even give a monkey's what English terms they know!  ;D

And Ken, I got a very nice package in the post today. I was right chuffed (gotta be careful where I use that term, as well - I can't remember what local town it was but in one area I was in up North that didn't just mean happy)! Anyway, thank you very much. My kids will be getting a nice surprise tonight. Yeah, I'll have to share...

Yup, I think that is an acquired taste too. Very acquired.

Acquired taste is a very gently description for an SGV.

You and the kids are more than welcome... let me know if you need "emergency" supplies - hope they were as good as the memory was...  I owe your kindness much more than that little treat... ;)

Oh yeah, I presume you meant something like "chuff-pipe..."

I know a UK someone that went into a busy Ft Lauderdale bar and asked for some change for the "fag machine..."  :o  :o  :o

Apparently, you could have heard a pin drop...

Denis... the Boffinses always waxed their feet...

Back in the 70's my folks had some friends from the UK stay with us, we all went out one evening and the male friend (can't remember his name) while sitting at the bar said "man I could go for a fag"   :o :o :o :o I only knew what he was talking about as I had read Ian Hunters Diary of a R&R star  ;D

Are you sure he wasn't looking at you and said "Man I could go for a shag?"

uwe

Being British, he wanted to shag a fag and then talk himself out of it! Those boarding school excesses wreak havoc on regular male sexual orientation, I tell you!

Always a bit awkward when a Dutch guy asks a British girl if she wants a shag.

It's tobacco...

And for some reason most tourists seem to think you get really high from this stuff.
Very funny when people from abroad start acting as if they're really stoned from a plain self rolled tobacco sigarette. ;D
