I remember reading Bill Mauldin's great book "Up Front", a collection of comments and cartoons from WWII.

In it, he made a comment to the effect that all Italian convoy drivers knew about trucks was the general location of the throttle pedal, and that they stopped by smashing into each others' bumpers.

I bet I read that 30 years ago, and I've never forgotten it.

Speed and control are necessary in certain cases. Say, when you're in Milan and want to make a quick exit from a certain Esso station. No one likes to hang around there.
