I would have thought the Les Paul myself. Yes, the SG was always cheaper, but I've personally always seen more Les Pauls around.

Doesn't surprise me. Just based on price alone I would think the SG would be tops.

I would have though more Les Pauls as well.  But if you only count Standards of each - not THE PAUL, Deluxes, Studios, etc - then I think more SG standards are around vs the more pricey Les Paul.  Thank you Angus, indeed.
Model One and Schallers?  Ish.

You think it's down to Angus? I would have assumed that the gigantic sales of the SG were in the sixties and early seventies, before Ac/DC broke the world. But Angus has certainly become the SG icon. Other players were Glenn Tipton (in the seventies to early eighties), Frank Zappa (pretty much throughout his career) and Page with his double-neck. Plus that painted thing of Clapton which ended up with Rundgren. But Angus and the SG have melted into one. He once said in an interview that any other guitar looks silly on him because he is so small.

I don't think Glenn Tipton ever really inspired that many youngsters to go drool over an SG at the local music store.

Err if we're talking exposure in the early years of when the SG was first introduced...

Les Paul himself...

George Harrison used one and was seen brandishing it in the music video's for "Paperback writer" and "Rain"

Say "Gibson SG" and Pete Townshend comes to mind

Mick Taylor used an SG to GREAT effect with the Rolling Stones

And shame on all of you for not mentioning Eric Clapton...

Dave W

Uwe did mention Clapton.

I agree, it's always had much broader appeal than just Angus fans.

Chris P.

Yep, in Britpop it's Paul Weller, Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics and of course Pete. But I would have thought LP too.

Forgetting Tony Iommi was inexcuseable ...  :-\ :-[

He was mentioned in Gibson's list.

I've always thought of the SG as a Clapton instrument - and he is one of the most well-known "names" in rock music.

That other axmon from Derek & the Dominos is a major influence too!!
Duane Allman played an SG some...for most of his legendary slide work!

That's reason enuf for me to buy one! ...but I haven't YET.
I'm still young tho. haha At least I've got an SG bass. It's a Sa-weeet Greco.
Duane's the reason Derek Trucks plays one. Some say he's Duane reincarnated.
Could be!

My fellow lefty Iommi makes me want a Black one!

Saw Zappa twice & he WAILED on his SG!!

I do own a Classic Les Paul Flametop Sunburst!
Dave Meniketti is my fav LP player but many others have inspired me.
I bought mine when I hit 10,000 posts on the meniketti.com forum. :D
Goin' on 20k posts there now...maybe I'll get an SG when I hit that!
My '83 Zemaitis is sorta like an LP....only WAY better!
I've got a bitchen '83 Ibanez Artist Double Cutaway Flametop Sunburst ax that's kind of a cross between an LP & an SG!!
My first Gibson was a Sonex--the low end wannabe LP which I got for $235!
Still have it tooo

My claim to fame with SG guitars is knocking one off its stand in a studio (my foot got tangled in a loop in the lead that was plugged into it) and, you guessed it, snapping the head straight off behind the nut as it hit the floor headstock first.   :-\
