If I only had the foresight to buy up all those 70s yellowed white Rics that were selling for $500-$600 in the mid to late 90s.
The collector's prayer. God, give me ten thousand dollars and send me back to 1965 for two weeks.

Whoa! Talk about a cool, rare bass (not that I like the color, but still...). I'd offer them $4995.

Olivia's listings on Reverb (including this one) have a Make Offer button. Go for it!

Here is an interesting bass. Red 4003 with black binding, but white pickguard and TRC and chrome hardware.

I have no idea if that is how it left the factory. With RIC, never say never. Could be an experimental bass - they toy with trim combinations from time to time. Or a previous owner might have swapped all the hardware for chrome. The TRC says MODEL 4001 so I'd guess not the original part, and the seller says that the guard is repro. Either way, IMHO it looks way nicer than the more common Red/BT.

Dave W

Didn't we see another one of those within the past couple of years?

Paul Boyer

Pretty sure that would have been a user swap out. You could order Red with the reverse trim option, and I've seen a couple that way. The revers trim option on Red would have white binding on body and neck, white pickguard and TRC and chrome hardware. This mix probably would not have been done at the factory, but as was mentioned, you can't rule out anything.

If he swapped out all the hardware, then I'm guessing there is a very attractive blacked-out Jetglo/BT with white binding (almost-Shadow) somewhere. And I'd really like to see it.

#1208
May '73 white refin. $2,390 BIN

I'm in love. Pricey for a refin+refret, but what an awesome looking Ric.

Dave W

Both of those are beautiful. The one at Olivia's may be a bit high, their listings usually are, but they always list the same items at their shop on Reverb with a Make Offer button. Probably due to the lower fees there.

'87 Red 4003S/5 Fretless! How rare is that. Special order. $5.8K BIN

Yes, optimistic considering he's have to find someone who would 1. Want a Rickenbacker five-string with its rather tight string spacing; 2. Want a fretless five-string; 3; Want that color combo; 4. Want to spend that much for a rarity. I think the seller may have to settle for less to make the sale.

As a documenter of the subject, it (and a Midnight Blue one) it is of extreme interest. The seller was kind enough to send photos for possible inclusion in a second edition of the book (no, not scheduled or even requested).
