Double Standards ...

I only noticed this now:

The new SG Standard (former SG RI) has block inlays:

The RIs had dots (only the Ltd. Ed. Supremes had block inlays).

But Gibson is still doing a Faded Version too, that features the old dots.

Which does raise - personal - issues. I don't collect for finishes. But do I not collect for block vs. dot? Do block inlays inflience the sound? Me thinketh not. Then they must be like finishes, which - as our forum 1st amendment goes - DO NOT INFLUENCE SOUND. So block inlays are like a different finish, no need to collect them!

I love block inlays, especially on F*****s, but on this bass the simplicity of dots just looks better, IMHO.

Actually I agree, expecially with the faded - it looks like a nicely aged closet sixties EB (with better pups!).

The block inlays look cluttered on a short scale neck.

I'd buy them both if I were you.

there are enough differences to justify addding them to Ze Kollekshön:

bockinlays and pore filled buffed out shiny finish
vs.
dot inlays and open grain one layer matte finish

I shouldn't even have raised the issue here ... it is hopeless getting any kind of consumption-averse advice from you guys.

If I remember correctly, you have three different versions of the Les Paul Doublecut/Money. Yes only two of those are technically the same "model", but don't they share the same top, just a different finish?

If I were a F**der collector, I'd have one of each Jazz when they switched from dots to dots and binding to blocks and binding...

I'm being stalked here!!!  The original Doublecut didn't have the walnut tone plate sandwiched between maho body and maple top of the later two GoW 2007 models (midnight blue and natural satin). But alas, the latter two are the same bass, just different finishes. Actually I prefer the original Doublecut in sound to the other two, because sans the walnut tone plate it just sounds tidier in the mids. The walnut makes the other two sound incredibly blurry and vintage which on such a new and modern design bass just feels weird to me.

Yes you are Nosbig, or should I call you Donnervogel, Ze Unknown Kollector? I think I've seen every bass in your collection, and I envy you. You're a shining inspiration to Gibson collectors all over the world, and I think you owe it to history to get every bass Gibson ever did: dot inlays or not.  ;D

I actually really liked Donnervogel alot................
and I have to say the block inlays just make that a really great looking bass.

The standard has an inlaid logo and crown too

I prefer rectangular block inlays over trapezoid. I think this is gorgeous (though the blocks could have been smaller):

Not quite on thread, but sorta just one step to the side - my RD has black dot markers, rather then the white ones she came with, which I thought was a bit pointless - white on white...?
