Did he also tell you that Paul strung his Rick up with such a high action that it almost was unplayable? According to the Beatles Gear book, his amplifier in those days was a Vox AC100 with 2x15 inch speaker cab and he played using the neck pickup only and did a lot of muting, probably with the foam under the strings because it would sound like a double bass.

And then there's of course the fingers, only Sir Paul can play like Sir Paul and sound like Sir Paul.

That's why I was surprised to see that his Hofner is set up with pretty low action.

Tried that. Flats, neck toaster soloed, tone rolled off, mute. Did not nail the Macca sound. But I'm okay with that, I like my Rics to have the clank.

By the way, in some pics it looks like the switch is in the horseshoe pickup position. I think it's possible that his '64 had a righty wiring harness in it, with volume knobs on top, and when the switch is in down position it actually selects the neck toaster.

Wow You really nail Paul's style and tone. Really loved the Ric in A Day In The Life, a much harder song to play than it sounds. I'm impressed.
