If you buy the '59  Burst, you'll also receive " a Les Paul from Gibson Custom's acclaimed Made 2 Measure program with their choice of a VOS, gloss, or Murphy Lab-aged finish."

Sounds like a bargain!

I'm not sure I get it, they are now selling vintage pre-owned guitars rather than reissues of those?

Well , it's been said that there are many more burst Les Pauls around than were ever built.

Not only that, supposedly there have been about twice as many authenticated by "experts" than were built.

BTW, that '59 Burst is described as being sold at Christie's in 2005. Turns out it sold for $268K back then. Wonder what Gibson is asking now.

That's just crazy. Even if I had the money and the Holy Ghost himself had played it.

They are trying to muscle in on Gruhn, Norm's Rare Guitars et al.

Funny as it might sound, I don't trust Gibson themselves to authenticate vintage examples of their own products. Too much at stake, plus the professional authenticators know every router chew mark, tool impression, etc.

Rumor has it that is once belonged to the guitar player from Deep Purple. Not Tommy Bolin - the other guy.

Good point, but in this particular case it's a known instrument. If it's a fake, it got by the experts when it was sold in 2005.

I honestly don't get the 59 burst madness. It's not a Strad.

Yeah, it's just crazy.

It would be interesting to see what they pay for a vintage guitar they plan to sell. Their legacy depends on the value of their instruments increasing in value. Therefore, would they pay more than most dealers?
