It's NOT a trick question. Nor a joke.

I may be able to lay my hands on a (vastly misrepresented) black EB-750 sans the original case.

There's no history of the instrument, no paperwork/COA, nothing. The present owner seems to be clueless, or is acting so.

I would hate to buy a piece that a fellow musician is crying for somewhere out there.

Any and all info would be appreciated before I actually get in the car and head to evaluate the beast.

Not aware a black one ever existed - only a few actually made it to Europe. The natural ones are the most prevalent, but I've also seen a few sunburst ones so black is a possibility.

Have you ever heard one? The large sustain block, the maho neck and the Bartolini circuit are not exactly the greatest combo. In my ears the passive EB-650 with a smaller sustain block, a maple neck and TB Plus guitar size humbuckers is a much better sounding bass.

Paul Barker played a black eb 750 with Ministry. Maybe he lost one on tour?
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

A Dutch friend of mine has a black one.
He also owns an EB-650. But the EB-750 is his favorite.

Black as a color is a shape absorber on cars and guitars (rhymes!) - with a hollow-body and arched top such as this one it looks kind of dead in black. But there in no accounting for taste. And finish - this forum of fora was key in establishing that - doesn't influence sound.

With the hifi'sh Bart electronics, this bass doesn't really sound too different to an LPB-2 Deluxe. The sustain block leaves little semi-acoustic character (just like it does on the EB-2) and the active electronics are not really geared to enhance what little there is. It's a visual thing mostly (the bass looks beautiful and well-made). At the same its response is on the sluggish side - the semi-acoustic effect is just noticeable enough to rob it of any immediacy and snap - with the maho neck adding to that characteristic.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I'm still recovering from serious surgery which was followed by an infection that almost killed me.

Thought of that EB-750 as a "get well soon" gift to myself. No more, no less. Never have I seen - let alone played - one IRL.

That being said, I won't take it for free if it's stolen.

In that case:

- do continue to get better,

- go for it!

Sorry to hear about your illness. But yeah, unless you get a vibe that it might be stolen, go for it.

That's a great looking bass. If you buy it and end up not liking it... I call first dibs :)

The only thing that looks kind of dead in this pic is maybe The Nuge. The black jazz box looks awesome. Not as awesome as your Super 400 fretless bass, but awesome nonetheless.

The guy who bought the same bass twice — first in 1977 and again in 2023

No problem.

I haven't forgotten about the pickup I promised you BTW, it's just that other stuff piled up unexpectedly...

Will get to it eventually, I hope...
